Carpet Protectant???

Other than scotchguard, what are some of the carpet protecters you guys use?  I would like to stay eco-friendly, but I would also be interested in anything you guys have to throw at me.  Thanks!

Well scotchgard is more of a household brand name, and a general term used to describe carpet protectants, than a professional carpet protectant itself. Also, most professionals use a teflon, but the term "teflon" (whom dupont has a registered trademark over) is also only a nickname to describe something that doesnt stick.
There are actually 4 different types of protectants:
1. Colloidal Silica
2. Silicones
3. Fluorochemicals
4. Acid Dye Resistors

Now, most protectnats that professionals use are either a fluorochemical, or an acid dye resistor. The acid dye resistor is basically an upgraded (and more expensive) version of the flurochemical.
Now with all that borning information, who wants to go into a customers house and say "excuse me Mrs. Smith, would you like me to treat your carpet with a flurochemical or acid dye resistors?!"
So instead we ask them if they would like to have their carpets protected, or sctochguarded. At least that's what we do.
We use Dupont Teflon advanced. It does not have acid dye resistors, but if it did we'd have to charge our customers more.

You also have to consider the coverage of the mixed ready to use protector.  For instance, Maxim is an acid dye resistor that costs more to purchase for a concentrated gallon and makes 6 rtu gallons.  Each rtu gallon covers 400-800 sqft depending on the pile.  It works really well and so far I haven't found anything cheaper to use per sqft.  I've heard that Hardball may be less expensive but I haven't checked into it yet (still have a lot of Maxim for now).

 I worked for just one day for a carpet cleaning company that was  using the name of a major store's name, back in 1994, a national store that everyone anywhere in this country has heard of, and we only did 12 houses that day, because the other guy was late, I was on time, 2 hour commute, and he stopped for a GF visit on the way to the first job . We "Scotchguarded" every job, and every room got treatment.  I posed as a brand new technician, to see how this company could charge so little.

That ProChem guard works great. Did a test on a patch of my own carpet. I am sold.
