| Other than scotchguard, what are some of the carpet protecters you guys use? I would like to stay eco-friendly, but I would also be interested in anything you guys have to throw at me. Thanks! |

I use Thompsons Water Seal for tents.....Varnish , Varathane , and Polyurethane works well too. If the carpet is really trashed.....I usually recommend painting it a darker colour with a Plastic Finish Paint.

Well scotchgard is more of a household brand name, and a general term used to describe carpet protectants, than a professional carpet protectant itself. Also, most professionals use a teflon, but the term "teflon" (whom dupont has a registered trademark over) is also only a nickname to describe something that doesnt stick. There are actually 4 different types of protectants: 1. Colloidal Silica 2. Silicones 3. Fluorochemicals 4. Acid Dye Resistors Now, most protectnats that professionals use are either a fluorochemical, or an acid dye resistor. The acid dye resistor is basically an upgraded (and more expensive) version of the flurochemical. Now with all that borning information, who wants to go into a customers house and say "excuse me Mrs. Smith, would you like me to treat your carpet with a flurochemical or acid dye resistors?!" So instead we ask them if they would like to have their carpets protected, or sctochguarded. At least that's what we do. We use Dupont Teflon advanced. It does not have acid dye resistors, but if it did we'd have to charge our customers more. When I was in biz we used to use a protectent called Scochgard???

Yeah, scotchguard is really all I hear of around here. I did check out the Dupont Teflon addvanced and it seems to be a little bit more cost efficient. It is actually a few bucks cheaper per concentrated gallon and has a pretty good dillution rate. (1 gallon makes 6)

I use butlers protector. Its alittle cheaper then scotchgard. But I still call it scotchgard. I dont think im being to dishonest

You also have to consider the coverage of the mixed ready to use protector. For instance, Maxim is an acid dye resistor that costs more to purchase for a concentrated gallon and makes 6 rtu gallons. Each rtu gallon covers 400-800 sqft depending on the pile. It works really well and so far I haven't found anything cheaper to use per sqft. I've heard that Hardball may be less expensive but I haven't checked into it yet (still have a lot of Maxim for now).
What's the coverage for the Dupont? I didn't find it on the website.

Back when I was in the carpet cleaning business people sold Scotchgaurd and proceeded to spray water on the carpet. What a scam that was. I worked for just one day for a carpet cleaning company that was using the name of a major store's name, back in 1994, a national store that everyone anywhere in this country has heard of, and we only did 12 houses that day, because the other guy was late, I was on time, 2 hour commute, and he stopped for a GF visit on the way to the first job .
We "Scotchguarded" every job, and every room got treatment. I posed as a brand new technician, to see how this company could charge so little.
As a 'new' tech, actually a carpet cleaner for 24 years already, I received no training, and did all the wand stuff.
The 'master' tech did the furniture moving and 'treatment'.
There was the Majical gallon bottle of "Scotchguard".
The tech got a $500 bonus only if he sold $1000 of protection.
He told me to get the bottle of "scotchguard".
It had less than 8 ounces of something in it.
He filled the bottle up with warm water and repeated filling the same wicked old looking bottle every time it went down to 4-8 ounches and repeated this all day long.
He got the month's goal done in one day.
$500/day was good money in those days.
Heck, 26 years later it still is, plus his day's cleaning earnings.
Scotchguard is a decent product, and for a $10/warrantee form with a great 7 year warrantee for the cosumer and tech, it was a win, win deal that no other product could match!Never had a stain call back for service.
I have used a lot of different products, spent entire days masking off vents and returns in high risers like the Ritz Carlton et al, due to odor migration of solvents.
In regards to the MONTREAL ACCORDS, i STOPPED USING 1,1,1 TRI, even though it was not bad, just a cousin of the bad stuff.
For carpets, I use water based protector from Vickers Industries in Yphank, Long Island, NY.
Manny Vickers is a chemist by trade, also invented one of the best car 'waxes' and sold it. I think it is called Zymol, but my memory is foggy.

PROCHEM makes "Fourguard" according to my sales guy he says its got an added element than Scotchguard. lol not sure what that would be, but IDK that Scotchguard is one of if not the most recognizable household names, even those who don't own carpets know scotchguard.
**Also, we are speaking of "Protectants" and by their nature are not Bio-degradable thus not giving us ANY green options. I always explain this and have yet to encounter an issue, even being a "Green" company. ------------- "A'ohe hana nui ka alu'ia." Translation: No task is too big when done together. |

That ProChem guard works great. Did a test on a patch of my own carpet. I am sold.

There is a brand name Zonyl which dilutes 32-1 only manufacters buy this, we bought it when I was with Carpet Plus in Denver
