Mr. Steamer: Insurance compaines do not agree with you. I have just been served from a client that slipped 2 years ago. I am being told it was our responsibility to have cones and signs erected. I of cource disagree because it is their house and I cannot dictate to them what ot do. I was also told signs similar to what garage have posted should have been visible. What a pile of sh*t.

I have been sued for 1 1/2 million from a slip/fall in an apartment building hallway. The building owner was sued too. As fate would have it we both have the same insurance company, but different divisions. They handled everything. The suit has been going on for years, if and when they pay they will then in turn sue (subrogation)the subcontractors or subcontactors insurance company. Have to be insured no matter where you are on the hierarchy. |

The minimum liability insurance requirement (here in Australia) for
government and property managers etc... to accept your bid used to be 5
million, but some have recently started asking 10.
It's an extra $300 per year. Justifiable, but irritating. *sigh* The insurance company I use knocked my bid back. They said I'm overpriced. I laughed. Cheers, Allen |

It's the old 80-20 principal. I will bet my bottom dollar that 80% of Toronto carpet cleaners do not have insurance. Now for the 20% that do what a wonderful opportunity to plasticise your policy and show it to every potential customer. Play it up and mention that maybe the guy who gave them that low, low, low quote just may not have insurance. Plant the seed. WHAT A SALES TOOL. Edited by Carpetologist |

This is a followup to my orignal post regarding a customer's injury. Here is the proper proceedures to follow when claening in someone's home according to Royal Sun Alliance 1) Signs and cones placed in around work area. 2) Door areas must be taped off as to make sure nop one enters or leaves work area. 3) Homeowner must be kept advised at all times where you are working. 4) You are responsible till carpet is completely dry. 5) Homeowner should sign that you have explained your cleaning system to them regardless how many times you have been there. As you can see I hope no one else has a situation like this happen. By the way the Royal was my insurance carrier. It looks like like the homeowner is good for around 30 to 40 thousand just to close the claim. Because of privacey laws I am not allowed to see what they said. Go fugure. I d |

Allen: The great thing about this is these people are in their 60's and the husband is already on a disiabilty. I worked with the man in the earily 70"s, been a friend since then and done their cleaning since the mid 80's so one never knows just who is going to stick it to you.

Doug, Thanks for the tip regarding wet floor signs and cones for insurance reasons. I have made a deal for a few and offereing them at an introductory price of $13.95 ea. Not only do they allow you to work in a safer environment but think of the impression you will leave. |

Is it not interesting that large corporations in the GTA are looking for in many cases an extremely competitive quote and yet they seldom ever ask how long you have been in the business or if you have insurance. And usually the lowest bidder generally has no insurance. This is one of the reasons he can quote so low. |
