oh shut up....theres an exception to every rule.....

Generalizing I think the average butthead with an $800 used portable will have a tough time making it in this carpet cleaning world.  Im not talking about freaks like you and me that game on with a whole new venture.  I have special freak rules for you and I......granted.....

Shall we start with basic training.....How did the chicken cross the road?

Careful, its a trick question....

Since carpet cleaners are not the typical customers their opinions being used to shape a business model is pure folly.  Mold the business after what your customers say.

However, I had one good suggestion from a guy who uses truckmounts about my coupons.  I personally think it is good advice.  Because of pre-conceived notions by some customers of the superiority of TM over porty units NEVER use an image that shows the porty.  Basically, let them be surprised at how well it does compared to what they believed.

Recall how it took people to downsize their cars from those boats we drove forever?  The smaller car still gets you there these days.  Guess we got over "Bigger is Better" with cars anyway.

If you believe that using a porty will hurt your business, then use boosters and leave it in the van. Boosters are cheap, and tanks are cheap too.

Where do you get boosters and can you give us a URL to one?

I take it you can use long hoses with one and the boost works for both solution and vac hoses?

I would also guess you would recommend using a generator.  I have a Mytee 1001 with heater and dual vacs so I have to plug into 2 seperate circuits or I do not have enough power and would pop circuit breakers all day.

The booster is only necessary for the vacuum. The solution can come from any machine and will work pretty well over the longer distances without any help.  You probably do want to use a generator if you don't want to draw attention to what you're doing.

The owner of this site sells some really cool boosters that work with a Ninjas and perhaps a few other machines (two boosters in a single box).  John L. has posted a picture in one of these threads already.  They are really compact. Nice! (Hey John, where are those pics?)

Also, see the link in my signature for another type that works with any machine, including one that doubles as a spotter.

Friendly,

Would 200 PSI be enough power for the extra distance?  And How long a hose could I use effectively with the power booster?  I would be wanting to build up everything around the portable left in the van.  Probably go with external tanks for grey and fresh water and maybe a heater?

I actually like the idea of a component based solution.  Makes replacement costs smaller when you are only buying one part of the overall system.

The only thing I can tell you is that I've never had problems with psi on longer hoses on any machines. I've never run more than 150 feet, however.

You will need a water heater. It would be electric or propane.

If you have extra hose, or someone you can borrow from, hook up the longer solution hose and try it out to see if you like it. I think you'll like it.

Also, if you have another portable, or one you can borrow, connect them to the same hose somehow to see if the suction works for you. You can have boosters with 1 or 2 extra vacuums, so make sure you're using an extractor that simulates what you intend to buy or make.  If you can find another portable that fits your budget, buy it and hook it up in series as a booster. The hose from the machine in the back will have to be hooked up to the recovery tank of the machine in front of it.

The owner of Cross-American can help you will all sorts of issues related to tanks. He sells holding tanks too.

I am looking at the QUADRA-4 Pack with the water tanks.  Then a propane heater and hose reel.  I use a rotovac which has a 1 1/2" tube and a standard 2 jet wand with the same size.  And of course a generator.

Pricing it all out in a purchase next year.  Between the weight of the ramp which is an 8' from rampkit.com (add the plywood and it makes 56 year old arms cry out) plus taking the porty up and down stairs, I know I am coming to the end of doing this one man operation without a change.  My back and legs have had it.  I have a back support belt and knee supports so I can keep on going.

Shame is having years of experience going back to 1971 and having the body that keeps you from doing what you know how to do.  Tried to hire somebody this week.  Got one guy who said he could work this weekend and then could not 30 minutes later (fired before hired), one guy who said he could work but his message phone (brother in law) couldn't locate him (fired before hired) and one guy my age with years of experience so he says but I need young, reliable and trainable - not old as me, is set in his ways and will be physically challenged while expecting more money for his experience.  Not to mention I checked out his website and he is jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none who will do anything for money which means his future with me is limited by himself.

But I will prevail.  Business keeps getting better with sales up 300% last year so growing a business is worth the Advil.
