We can sit here and argue about what method is best... how much should or shouldn't be charged, what kind of chemicals to use, to move or not to move furniture.

But the fact of the matter is, no matter what you do it's the customer you have to please.  The customer can be you're biggest supporter or your worst enemy.

At the end of the day no matter what method you use, it's your customer that will decided your faith... It could be five great referrals or five kisses of death..

I think we debate and bicker too much among ourselves when it's the enigma we call the customer is what one really has to figure out.

bad news travels faster than good news. your client will tell more people about you if they're unhappy, than if they happy (with you and your service)

I hate to say it but a lot of cleaners are just in it for the money.... They don't care about how good the jobs comes out.  The line they use is"wait until it dries"

No matter the method you have people that are doing the splish splash grab cash and dash...

Mr. Steamer:  Some have lowered the standard so much along with the price they have no time to stop and smell the roses. I wonder just who's fault that would be.  The industry is not in an upward spirial. Is it external pressure causing this problem or is it a problem from within the industry?  If you find out I would like to know.Guitar

Doug it's one big circle.....

The little guy undercuts the Big guy...the big guy then lowers his price too...then the little guy undercuts him again...then the big guy lowers it so low the the little guy has to clean for free...

The way I see it... soon we'll be paying customers to let us clean their dirty carpets

Mr. Steamer:  You have such a way with words.  I think some people have that already planted in their minds when they call for an estimate.Guitar

Doug these higher gas prices are going to change everything... I'm feeling it too... subbing is most likely going to end for me this yeas.. I'm spending easily 120 bucks on 2 days gas 10-14 jobs... Thats almost 400 bucks a week and if I get a wash  wooooooooooooow

but yet the prices are still going down we are paying about 30 cents more for gas than we did last year

mr. Steamer:  We don't do the numbers you do but we certainly drive enough.  I am hoping that some of my competitors who drive that 1 1/2 hours to out little town will soon go broke buying gas.  The same is for larger restoration companies, claims are dowm they have to keep everybody working  but in most cases it is driving just to pay the bills. They drive here regardless of the size of the claim. WE have cut our service area down unless the job is worth the drive.  People have got wise they know no one wii drive to their remote area for nothing so they book several areas, then when you get there they only want one room done.  They educate themselves quickly on how to beat the system.  In some cases we leave and don't even unroll the hose.  At that point I am only out gas and labour, no sence cleaning for nothing too.Guitar

The worst thing doug is when you get there they cancell all the rooms except one... Then they argue about the min. call price... Then you find out that the room is full of furniture..... But there comes the Kicker...Her husband has stayed home to help you move each and every piece...while the truck is outside drinking up the little profit...

and if you say noway... they demand you to clean it... The customer is the boss

doug,

THe cheaper equipment gets and the less expensive the products become the more it will attract the low life to this industry. Low life brings low quality and low price. Someone on welfare can afford to get into our business.  So what's that say for our industry? All this may be good for my sales organization but very bad for the industry as a whole.

Sold an old used clunker to a guy 3 weeks ago for $500. He called me last Saturday and said he is cleaning million dollar homes and feels he needs something that could kick-ass and is willing to upgrade for approx. $200 more if I could get him one. So this is what the professional is up against.

Maybe he does a good job Ted... who knows, you have to start somewhere... This is a big city more than enough to go around... so the customer might get a crappy job... but they'll keep trying different cleaners until they get the right one or hardwood floors...lol
