I have a question, I want to start my own carpet cleaning business, I used to help my dad with his years ago. How is the best way to start? Save a lot of cash and get a truck mount? or start with a portable and work your way up? Also do those rotovac or Von Schrader programs work?
Thanks
Brian

Do what your dad did.....Von Schrader in my opinion is junk, unless you know of  a casino who thinks it's great, then you'll make alot of money.

Now, I have a question.....how can a person want to start a businesss they know very little about and expect to succeed

Most of us did just that, and a lot of us are still here years and years later.

Easily with asking questions and research.

Beerman   Food for thought..  Most carpet mills are demanding hot water extraction as the only cleaning method to maintain their carpets.  Truckmounted HWE systems are the best way to preform this service. So if I was to start a carpet cleaning business than a truckmounted HWE system is the way to go.

Hi Beerman,

Experience and expertise are important in any businesses. This kind of business is profitable you can market your service residential or in commercial. However it requires knowledge and necessary equipment to complete the job.

If you are looking toward doing warranty work get certified and use a truckmount.
If you learned HWE you may want to start there.
If you know how to control a rotary machine you could give bonnet cleaning a try.
If your plans are to do commercial, go OP.

These are just suggestions, not hard fast rules.  Opinions vary, but everyone here is willing to offer suggestions.  Ultimately, the decision is yours.

I think if you take a franchise, you're just workin' for the man again.  It's not really YOUR business.  Just my opinion.  I've never had experience with a franchise.

I started my business doing Commercial Cleaning. Daily maintenance cleaning, dumping garbages, etc.  I cleaned only the carpets at my businesses and offered a discount to the employees of those businesses.  They tell their friends and so on and so on, and I'm busy now.  I got a girl doing my daily cleaning at night and I clean carpets.  I do OP cleaning only.  Never have done HWE, I wouldn't mind picking up a portable machine though.  Some people are just set in there ways and ONLY want HWE.

That's what worked for me anyways.
