Actually carpet is making a rebound, production has increased over the last 12 months.

In the residential market there is less carpet per house, however, there there are more homes.  people who have gone the hard surface route have found out it is not all roses, more work than carpet to maintain it etc. etc.

The commercial market is very brisk, so no problem for the cleaning market.

I'm sure the numbers vary from region to region. I'm busy all year and the carpet stores are busy too.

As long as your market area has cold weather carpets are here to stay. I live in Montana. Not to many people want to walk on cold tile and hardwoods in the winter.

A lot of my customers are putting in hardwood floors or laminate which looks like hardwood floors. There is still a lot of carpet out there.

I keep hearing over the last 10 years or so that tile and hardwood are taking the place of carpet in homes.   I don't see it in the Northwest, (a little more hardwood possibly) maybe in the south in the warmer climates they are going more with tile as opposed to carpet.   The only real increase in tile I see is in bathrooms or kitchens which were not usually carpeted to begin with, just replacing vinyl.

Yes the usage of carpet is decreasing day by day. People want different thing for that. I want some thing that is easily wash able. After that it is new again

It depends on allot of factors. Area, Price, Quality, Marketing etc.  I believe the best way to go is to offer other services in the customers home that benefit them.

Some people think their doing themselves a favor by switching to other flooring types because they're tired maintaining carpets. They are realizing that there is no problem-free flooring. There is a home fashion trend away from carpets, but these things ebb and flow. Anyway, it hasn't put a dent in my business. As the last post states, more flooring options means more services to offer.

Hardwood fad will slow down and  carpets for main floors will come back....I am seeing this already in some new homes.

Benefits of carpets; filter sound, dander and dirt, and are warm and cozy on the feet.

I have customers who have hard wood floors and they are all scratched up,,,,Hardwoods are just to finicky....Carpets making a come back.

I also promote to my customers that carpets are healthier for asthma sufferers then hardwoods, it really grabs their attention. EPA and other agencies have done studies to prove this, know your material and just watch the interest in their eyes grow.

If you do a mix of carpet, hard floors and upholstery I think you have a good mix.  The trick is then in the name.  Is your company name going to pigeon hole you into just one item of cleaning?  I'm giving some thought to changing mine.

I've been mulling over the same thing, duckcountry. Such-and-such Home Textiles and Flooring Services may be a good way to go. The last iicrc course I took, Doug Heifferman was insisting that our industry is moving toward an "Indoor Environmental Specialist" concept. Although he's prone to overstatement, he's often right.

You want to know if carpet sales are increasing or decreasing? Watch the price of oil. $50 oil or less and lots of carpet gets sold. Above $100 and not so much. By the time it hits $200(in 2014 according to a Military report I have read) there will hardly be any sold except possibly the high end wools and some commercial carpets. Make sure you are more than a 1 trick pony by the time that happens.
