If someone was traveling, by air, from Calgary to the USA, where would they clear US Customs?

Yes they would have to clean US Customs at their point of departure.

And if there are any problems that person may not make the plane.

It saves time having US Customs agents in Vancouver and large citys that fly direct to the United States.

The US customs officers are at each airport in Canada so you clear as you go throught the airport. no big deal you just fill out a card first.

Best to arrive at the Canadian airport 2 hours before your flight. Last week I flew from Toronto to Phoenix but did notice the US Customs guys in Toronto really have no sense of humour.

the ones in Calgary wont either...at least AFOAF, who was tipped off to possible hanky panky by AFOAF

In Canadian airports the U.S. Customs area is actually considered American soil. They have special privileges here.

Splash and Dash says they have no sense of humour, he ain't kidding. Once I went to the Customs man and he asked me "from themoment you were born, till now, have you ever been arrested?"

Like give a guy a break!

The earlier answers are accurate for today.  But U S Customs and Border Protection is in the midst of changing requirments for travel, which will impact crossing from Canada (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative) for 2006.

Suggest you visit CBP's site for more details.  http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/west_hem_init/west_hem_faqs/dhs_faqs.xml - http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/ west_hem_init/west_hem_faqs/dhs_faqs.xml
