# The first thing you need to consider is the type of carpet that you have. Today, there are many different types of carpets available on the market. Is your carpet woven, needle felt, tufted or flat weave? A specific cleaning technique as well as cleaning solution is required depending on the type of carpet you own.
# After identifying your type of carpet, the next step is to choose the right cleaning solution to be used that will work best on the carpet type you have. After all, you cannot just clean your carpet with merely the use of water. A cleaning solution is used to ensure you have removed all dirt and dust that have accumulated, especially deep into the padding.
# When dealing with carpet stains, the first thing to do is to identify what kind of stain is it? Is it a water-based or oil-based stain? Different cleaning approach is used depending on the type of stain on your carpet. Cleaning the stain immediately is the most important thing to keep in mind. When using commercially prepared stain solution follow the instructions carefully.
# Never brush or scrub the stained area on your carpet as this may agitate the fibers of the carpet resulting in more damage.

All the dirt and dust that have accumulated deep into the fibres would only turn to mud if you simply add water and your cleaning solution .

The best tip to cleaning a residential carpet to to throughly and properly vacuum the carpet FIRST ( twice if you have to ) prior to cleaning . This picks up all pet and human hair which is pretty much impossible to extract when wet.

A carpet cleaner without a Pile Lifter Vacuum or somewhat equivalent has no business cleaning residential carpets and call himself a professional .

That's why I don't clean residential, you have to care about your customers well being and property, and stand behind your utmost quality of work. I don't care about my customer or their carpets.....so I mainly do commercial and industrial carpet cleaning contracts.

I think you are asking hoe to determine the type of fiber. A simple burn test will help. Clip a fiber from a corner or under a vent and hold it over a sink when you light it. You should use a hemostat or pliers so you don't burn your finger. The smell and bead left from burning the fiber help. Nylon smells like celery, olefin smells like tar, wool smells like hair and it wont hold a flame it will sizzle. That's about all I remember from my carpet cleaner tech class 15 years ago. Their are tables in the manuals.
