I am starting a new carpet cleaing co. next year and have $30K set aside for advertising. I need some opinions on where that would be best spent. I was thinking of half page ads in all the yellow pages, a website, and direct mailings.

Starting out a new venture like carpet cleaning for the 1st year.....spend nothing on advertising , keep your day job, and work only week-ends and after work hours. If you have 30k to lose then your equipment must be all paid and debt free.....RIGHT.     If the answer to that question is     WRONG          Then I will stop here and not even bother to continue..........let me know the answer.

Yes. I plan on buying all new equipment including a midsize truck mount. I am paying cash for everything and have no debt. Getting a job is not really an option. I currently own a lawn service & make 100K a year. I'm moving to CA where doing the same thing would pay 20-30K due to all the illegal imigrants working for cheap. I only need to work 1 day/ wk to cover basic living expenses. Why do you say don't spend anything on ads?

All the ways you posted are all old fashioned, and are not the best route to go for marketing.  A top knotch website, will give you instant credibility, and allow you to market through a modern source.  Focus on getting internet optimization software, and start by linking your site to as many sources online you can.  The most direct link from other website to yours the better you will be, and the more likely Google or other web search engines find you.  I am building my business from the ground floor, and have our buisiness model focusing on web-based marketing, and heavy online presence.  I havent went to a Yellow Pages in years.  If I need something like an address or a number I "google" it.  Think about it, and start there.

Wouldnt it be wise to start with a GOOD Portable, that way you are not limiting yourself to just residential jobs also.  You can approch the high rises, and other busisness that a truck mount just wont cut.

yellow pages is done website is best but you have to market the site if nobody see it. also if your price is right pay per click works very well till you build a list of client you can have some repeat customers

Website + online directory listings + targeted keyword advertising sounds right to me.

I'm not convinced of the return for yellow pages print advertising...

Even if you don't have a job to do, have the van on busy roads where the signage can be seen.  It is a billboard on wheels.  Starbucks is a great place to start out early in the morning with your company shirt on and a business card holder on the side of the van.  Busy working stiff both male and female venture there.  If they have $4 to blow on a coffee drink they make enough to enlist your services.

I started with 2K and used ValPak and a website (ranked with SEO). I referenced the website demo videos and before and after pics on my ValPak ads. It worked like a charm. My business took off right away.

Do you continue to use ValPak?  Would you say the response is as good as when you started, better, or working but at a reduced rate?

All I can say is to stay way from places that other carpet cleaners advertise, unless you are the first ad to be seen
When I loked at starting up in Minnesota, I was going to get a small moped, have someone go around and postinging them in the under part of their mail box, secret is to fit a tracker to the bike to ensure they actually do the job.

website is good, few websites is better. Also buy yourself DSLR camera and some lenses (or just a video camera) and shoot some videos about your company, before/after pictures so you can show it to your customers. It works better if they can see it but not only hear it from you.

You will find some of your people turn to the web.  Others see ads on TV.  Some work from ads delivered to their door or mailbox.  Consumers are not a single herd, they are broken into several herd heading in different directions from what I have observed.

New phone book arrived today, 4 years ago there were about 6 pages of display ads for carpet cleaning, from full page, half page and on down, (I was spending about 30k/yr)   The new book has only one display ad about 1"x2".  Carpet cleaners have seen yellow page usage die out almost completely, our target market is all online searching now.
