What's up. I was wondering what you guys think of the Hydramaster RX 20. I just picked one up for $500. About 5 years old, has some blemishes but seems to be working smoothly. I really couldn't afford it at this point but it seemed like too good of an offer to refuse. So. Am I going to enjoy this thing? Or will I be selling it on Ebay? hahaha.

First day report.

There are some pro's and con's. As a former (4 year) bonnet cleaner the machine handles very very easily. The exact same as a buffer as a matter of fact. The work has become effortless and it seems to be a more precise cleaning. I didn't break a sweat all day today.

The cons. Well, just like in bonnet cleaning, if you have a two story home it's a bit of a pain in the ass. You have to roll up the power chord, haul the machine downstairs and unroll the chord. Still, it's easier than running the wand. It takes up more room in the van (obviously) and it doesn't clean edges properly so you still have to carry a wand (plus if it breaks down you want to have a back up anyway).  This is definitely a TRAFFIC LANE KILLER! I was really surprised at how easily the traffic lanes lightened up, some gone 100%.

This unit seems to run very smoothly. It's a little older looking but I figure the $2000 I saved would have been wasted in 6 months ANYWAY because the thing isn't going to stay new forever if bought brand new. For $500 I am really happy with it and it makes those big rooms MUCH easier! I do however find that it takes LONGER to clean (properly anyway) than the wand. But then again I just got it so maybe my technique will improve with time (my plan of attack rather). But I'm running it just like I use to run the bonnet.. so I don't now how much improvement I'm going to get. It's definitely lighter than the Nobles floor machine I use to bonnet clean with.

More negative aspects are the heads. They cost in excess of $1000. A tile cleaning head costs $600!! That's more than I paid for my tile tool (which was burnt up when I had the fire in the van though because it was sitting on top of my waste tank).

In conclusion... for $500 it's well worth it. Maybe even $1000. $3000 new? I'd be really pissed off right now. But on the flip side... you really don't break a sweat. The only time you have to work is when you move this thing up and down stairs or when rolling/ unrolling your hoses. Bonnet cleaning labor with truck mount power. Very nice indeed! But not $3000 worth. Who knows though.. maybe my mind will change about that as I use it more and more.

You got a great price on that thing

I ran mine with glides  and blocked off 2 of the jets (I always felt it used way too much water for my liking) and it worked great.

You can really move on a commercial job with the RX without killing yourself

I have the plate for bonneting and scrubbing,,,,,,,,nice to haveWink

Fourth day report:

OK. I'm in love with this thing now. Screw the wand! Every time I clean stairs I cringe getting my wand out. Soooooo much easier. And the jobs come out VERY nicely. Like I said, it's a traffic lane KILLER! I hit a hallway without prespraying it first and it still came out looking GREAT! I presprayed it and did it again just because I wanted to do it right but it's amazing what this thing can do! I just wish the heads were just a little bit wider. As wide as the wand, so I can pick up little stuff in the carpet that didn't come up during vacuuming (like a paperclip or peice of paper or something that would get trapped in my in line filter). Other than that... AWESOME!

I was working in the ghetto yesterday. Ghetto Joes carpet cleaning pulled up while I was in the customers house and was checking out the machine in the back of the truck. Almost learned a costly lesson. the RX is the FIRST thing into the customers home and the LAST thing into the van!

Awesome tool! Definitely worth $500 used. I'd even go as high as $2000 new but still not $3000. It's just a freaking buffer with an air intake and jets. I can get a brand new buffer for $899. This thing should retail for $1499.99. That's a fair price and would turn the industry over. I bet they are losing a lot of sales selling it for $3000. If 10,000 people bought it for $3,000.. I bet 50,000 would buy it for $1500.

Still, if you find one in a pawn shop or find someone selling a used one, I highly recommend it. I cleaned FIVE houses today. With the wand... after three, I'm calling to reschedule the other two.

Make sure you have the newer "high-efficiency" carpet head on the unit. The carpets will dry alot faster.

Is that for portables? I've never heard of the "slow" speed. I actually called Hydramaster and asked them about the difference between the old ones and new ones and they said "just the heads". Can you elaborate? I might be interested in getting a back up one. Where are you locateD?

We are located in North Dakota. Hydramaster should have been able to explain, perhaps better than I, but here goes, Hydramaster's first RX-20 were all what was called standard speed, then they made some modifications and brought out a lighter weight, faster rotation speed unit. Some liked it some didn't like it so they kept producing the standard for a period of time. Now I think it's just the higher speed available but I'm not sure. The standard speed unit is the Boss when it comes to trashed Apt. or residential. The only reason
I'm not using it is because I have hip issue and it is a bit aggressive for me. But I'm 53. For all you young bucks it would be ideal.

The slow speed units used a Horizontal motor placement and was the more durable of the 2 designs. The high speed units used a vertical motor placement.

I was thinking of looking at the RV360 as I do mainly domestic and some commercial. If I was doing HD commercial the RX looks more up to the job.

I honestly don't remember what year I bought it. I bought it new. My best guess is
about 12-15 years ago. I'll try to get some pictures and PM them.

The RX20 you have has the wrong vac heads on it. Do you have the original vac heads or only the newer half-filled ones? If I bought it, I would have to swap out the star and heads and that is not cheap to do. I prefer the slow speed RX20 over the high speed one but most of the remaining ones are beat to hell. Where are you located?

Why would you need to swap out so much? Finding glides might be difficult now, but if possible I would just put some teflon glides on it.

I have used an RX-20 for over 20 years.  Not much anymore as I primarily do higher end residential.  When I was doing all apartments I used it every day on heavily soiled carpets.  It was incredible how it can take a filthy, matted carpet and make it look like new again.  Just make sure you have a powerful vacuum as it will put out a lot of solution and can induce wicking of soil, use a couple dry passes.
