Before I clean a carpet (or upholstery) I always spray some of the chemical I'm using in a hidden spot to test for color fastness.

When I first got into carpet cleaning I was practicing by cleaning the carpets in my house. My bedroom carpet was different from the carpet we have throughout the entire house. After my beige bedroom carpet dried, I noticed some light pink spots, but you had to be on your knees to actually see them. I thought maybe I made a mistake by not rinsing properly, but after talking about it at home and with the chemical company, we determined they must have been old stains or wick backs.

I cleaned an apartment about a month ago with the same exact type of beige carpet. Before I started cleaning I was setting up my equipment and noticed a HUGE pink spot in the one bedroom. Then throughout the apartment there were various tiny pink spots identical to those I had at my house. I asked the customer about it and he said he didn't know what they were, but said it was all new carpet when he moved in and he had the carpets cleaned once before and that's when the spots appeared.

Yesterday I cleaned another similar beige carpet and noticed the same exact pink spots. Could these pink spots be popping up because the carpet isn't colorfast? I mean even though you test for color fastness, that's only in one spot. That doesn't mean 5 feet away there could be a spot that isn't colorfast.

Any thoughts?

Well when I first saw this problem months ago I tried to look into it myself and came across this article online:

http://carpetology.com/articles/?p=17 - http://carpetology.com/articles/?p=17

The spots in the pics were identical to what I was describing, except mine did not have the black fiber in the center. This guy had hundreds of pink spots but I only had a few.

I'm sorry if it was a dumb question...

Edit: Sorry the link didn't work, I fixed it now.
