Looking for some help from people that have experience in this area.

Last week we had our carpet cleaned by a reputable cleaner.  It is in our living room and is berber.

The cleaning was finished on a Wednesday morning.  By Thursday we had a funky smell coming from the room and late Thursday afternoon the carpet was still real damp.  Called the company and they came back out on Friday, cleaned it again and used some other sprays to get rid of the smell.

Saturday morning came and the smell came back and the floor was still damp.  It was actually so bad last night (Sunday) after we got home to a closed up house that I felt sick to my stomache because teh smell was so strong.  We have put another call in to them today and they are sending someone out today to take a look at it.

There is also a stain that "keeps" coming back and the smell is strongest in that area but its definitely not confined to that area as it smells 8 feet from there as well.  I do not know what the stain is but based on the circular shape I'm going to guess one of my cherubs may have spilled something months before this cleaning.

Other info...

Carpet is 4 years old.  Cleaner thinks it is made of "recycle plastic", I'm not so sure but will be checking with the store when they open.

32+ hours from initial cleaning the carpet was still damp (seemed to finish drying sometime during the night).

26+ hours from the second cleaning the carpet was still damp.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Not sure at all what to do in this type of situation.

Toss it out and get new carpet.
Also, it is time to check for mold (mould).
Do you have any pets?

No, no pets

We can't afford to replace it right now which is why we decided to have it cleaned.

4yrs old? They did a crappy job both times.. It should have dried in 1-2hrs.. Inexperienced hacks.. It needs to be redone by one of us regulars on this forum.. Or hunt for a Professional that knows what he's doing..Big%20smile

What "credentials" should I look for if I call a new place?  This was place came recommended and is bonded/insured and did a great job on my friends house and have also been in business for 65+ years.  Guess I need to know what to look for so I don't have this happen again.  Thanks :)

If the stench never comes out, any opinion on who is going to have to "pay"?  Will it be us or do we have a leg to stand on to get them to pay for it.  This really stinks (no pun intended) right now and just spent a great deal on a new living room set so we are sorta out of money for the next few months (and I can't live w/ the smell!!!)

Couple of things to look for  Number of years in business, are they certified IICRC

Secondly  I would suggest you have the new company check to make sure the pad and underside of the carpet are dry before anymore cleaning is done. As ststed above a properly cleaned carpet shoukld be dry in a few hours, depending on weather conditions, but never more than 8 hours
