I have read a lot of Mr. Steamers advice and I think he really knows his $hit. We're lucky to have a guy here who pulls no punches and is not full of crap.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY HE DOES NOT HAVE A HIDDEN AGENDA!

With all due respect.... what advice are you specifically refering to?

You can just post the link to the topic... you don't have to copy/paste or describe anything.

Thanks in advance,

Allen

No Suction welcome to the light, DougVADER claims to be my farther.  I am Luke SteamCleaner a Wandeye Knight.  May the HydroForce be with you.

I refuse to talk about certification again, make up your own mind.  I'me certified with the IICRC because it's the only place you can be certified as a carpet cleaner, and I'm not affraid to admit the the whole thing is flawed, but it's all we have.  so I rest my case, you choose your path son, it could be the red or blue pill... It's up to you be a SteamTrooper or a Wandeye Knight

The offer sounds tempting, but I haven't the patience or the time to be teaching a young buck like you the do's and don't of what to do.

You get better when you age with time. In some aspects it's so true.

Why would anybody want their carpets cleaned on a long week end. We have lost our priorities. Every body should go away or stay home with the family and have a good time before school starts and life goes to second speed and the turmoil starts.

Adwa:

Most long weekends to me are a drag: no money! I can usually bump up my rate for a long weekend anyway, so it's GREAT money.

I've got no problem with working the weekday of a long weekend (I never work Sundays), unless it's ANZAC day.  It's the Aussie version of Memorial Day.  I don't know what the Canadian equivalent is. Working that day is just plain disrespectful.  I'll work Queen's Birthday or whatever without thinking twice about it.

I catch up w/ friends when I want, as many of them are self employed & I see my family more now that I'm self employed then I ever did working behind a desk.

My priorities ARE family: that's one reason I went out on my own.

Just my $0.02 -

Good point Allen

I never looked at it that way and that's because I work the traditional 5day week and to me it is important when I have an extra day off to try to spend it with my family.  Thanks for the enlightening.

I'm sitting here this morning on my holiday typing to you guys in this very peaceful environment with my music blaring on my head phones and my family is fast asleep. I am not going to wake them with yelling get up it's time to start moving and watch the hustle and bustle begin. Who benefits from this probably me but I will look like the good guy and hence it is going to be a great day.

Allen: "So, when were you looking at getting this done?"
Customer: "We're painting on the Saturday and Sunday, so could you do it on the long weekend Monday while all the furniture is out?"

Allen: (to self) "Cha-CHING! goes the register"
Allen: (to customer) "Sure... Monday's fine"

Sometimes the long weekend Friday or Monday is the only time they have avaliable.  Most people that I've delt with don't want carpet cleaning done after they've been at work all day.  That's when they want to sit down with a glass of Chardonnay and a meal.  Especially 2-income houses.

I don't work 9-5 M-F. I've had enough of that for a while.

Hey, but I give it my best.  There are certain words that make me think, CHA-Ching!

"No one was avaliable on such short notice"
"I've heard that carpet protection is really expensive, but worth it.  Would you advise that I have it put on?"

and, after 6 weeks in business:

"You did our carpets last year.  I know you're always busy, but could you book us in for next week?"

So far, though, the only time I've followed up on that with a substantial monitary increase is when I hear, "I just got your number from so-and-so... she recommended I call you."

I thought you just started your business, how could she say you did her carpets last year. Unless of course you bought some one else's business.

Or maybe I'm missing something.

No, ADWA... they thought I was somebody else.  I didn't correct them, but cleaned their place.  After confirming that they were happy with the job, I left a card and promised to send them a reminder letter with a discount voucher for their next clean.

Who did they think I was?  Beats me.
