Ok, I know im putting myself before the firing squad, but i would like some real opinions......in my area most folks are used to carpet cleaners coming in with a truckmount, and running in with hose stretching through their house to clean their carpet. I use a porty, with 50 ft. of hose, in most cases i leave the machine at the door, and stretch to the rooms. But how are you supposed to convince your custy that you can do a great job with a machine that isnt mounted in your van. Now im not say'n just as good of a job as a truckmount would give you, cause i have used a truckmount, granted it was an old hydramaster truckmount that was older than most of their kids, but still, you didnt have to bring it in their house. I got rid of that truckmount cause it was more trouble than it was worth, not to mention that it cost me more money for the up-keep, than my porty. Now you guys that run truckmounts, I know your gonna bust my ass cause i dont run a TM, but for now, It better suits me to run a porty. But for you guys that run a porty, you know what im gett'n at when it comes to folks that are used to a TM, and you try to come in with a porty, even though you know you can produce a great job with it, they still want to ask questions. How do you handle those questions???

Ooohhhh.....I taking it you ran a porty at one time, and you weren't bright enough to plug into seperate breakers..........Well it might be easier for you to turn a key, and pull a choke, than to use what intelligence you "might" have, to know better than to plug a porty into the same breaker..... Just remember, if your "anyone" in the carpet cleaning community, you were most likely in my position at one time.......Wink

The way i read the reply from Ken is Ok, he was tongue in cheek telling you to do this to let the customer think you really did have a powerful portable. SO powerful in fact you blew all her breakers.

You certainly went straight for his throat with your reply.

That was the impression I got.  He is saying prove the power by blowing the circuits.  Think of the advantages of a portable.  What are they environmentally?  What has technology done to make these more powerful today compared to say 5 years ago?  What are the strengths of your portable?

I know ... take a bucket of clean water and suck it up with the hose and no wand.  How long does it take to do a gallon or two.  What does that mean to the customer?

Good catch Mick.  Great recommendation, Ken is Ok.

aAt the end of day it doesn't matter how big and powerful your machine is, if you still don't use it properly it'll do a pig of a job, whereas the worst machine in the best operator's hands will still do a more than admirable job; it'll just take longer!

My first machine was a small, 50psi, twin vac machine that didn't have a pump out or auto-fill, basic as basic came. In fact, the machine still sits in my spare vehicle. Basic as it was, I could still out-perform most of my competition that used truckmounts. Why? Cos I gave a toss about outcomes, not simply what I could bleed out of a customer's pocket!

Training played an important part in that as well, giving me an understanding as to how the whole process is supposed to work. Being Professional in your line of work (and that means knowing exactly what your job is, not just guessing or hoping for the best!) will help you decide how to tackle any job most effectively with the tools you have at your disposal... whether it's the grandest machine with every bell and whistle possible, or the grungiest little wheezer ever foisted on the cleaning fraternity!

Few people in their life have seen any type of machine used for any purpose with two cords. Point out that that makes it a powerful machine, with "industrial-strength vacuums and pump". Say it with a smile on your face, like you're really proud. If you're excited and confident about it, they will be too.

Also, explain that any machine loses power the longer the hose is. You have your machine running on their doorstep, whereas others would have the machine in their driveway/on the street.

Also, only use 25' hose when you can get away with it.

medic most people here know that I only use portables with 2 cords so that's why I said what I said.

I never worry about what the competition uses just like I dont worry about the length of another mans penis.

I dont think you can clean as well with a porty.  That's my opinion.

Best thing I ever did was upgrading from a porty to a truck mount.

Harvey: yes you can, just gonna take you a sh*tload longer! Of course a truckmount will clean way better if you do exactly the same thing, but take the time and effort, and you will get a damned good result out of a porty as well.

That's why I always tell people that just cos you don't have the running cost of a truckmount, it doesn't mean you don't need to charge the same as a truckmount guy... you will for the extra time it's gonna take you to get the same result!

People feel better about giving you that money too because they look at your hourly rate being lower than the truckmount fella.  They see just as good a job but in their minds paid less.

Of course if they are all about the money, a RugDoctor wins out and they use their imaginations to feel like they can do as well as you.

I would charge more for porty in apartments...if I used a porty...

Truthfully i would only do apartments if I had a porty and furniture

I do not mind the extra time with a porty, to be honest, i kinda like watching the skeptic's face when they see that you can do the job just like the tm guys. Harvey, you must have been blowing and going with your porty.
