I am soo furious at the guy who helps me clean. Listen to this... I have an "employee" , who I call a week in advance when I need him to help me with a job, I called him a week ago letting him know we had a job this Saturday, then I called him again 2 days ago and to remind him of the job, then I called him AGAIN yesterday to double remind him. He has a slight drinking problem so he forgets sometimes, but he is an excellent worker, so I can overlook that, he's for the most part pretty reliable too, but I was today contemplating on stabbing him in the eyebecause this M*ther F**ker, told me yesterday for the third time that he would be up and ready for the cleaning...which mind you was a client that I lost 6 months ago and was giving me a second chance and this M*ther F**ker knew this. So when I come to pick him up this morning, his son answers the door and says that his dad had to leave early to go out of town and that he was taking his spot. I could have blew the guys house up right there. I was so furious. So to make an already long story shorter, we ended up not getting the restaurant done before it was time for the place to open and to make it worst all my equipment was still on the floor when customers started coming in. I have to go back tomorrow morning and finish. What do you guys think I should I do to redeem myself with this restaurant ?? I'm calling the GM when he gets in later, I told the manager that I would pick up the check tomorrow when I finished because I wanted to talk with the GM first. Has this ever happened to anyone else? What should I do/say?? And what should I do with my "employee"?

He won't do contracts, I already tried to get him to contract with me. No its 2500 square feet of nothing but tables and chairs, I would be there 12 hours trying to do it myself.

oh yeah, by the way I ended up going back to that unfinished restaurant the next day and still not finishing in the timeframe that I thought it would take, so it took me a third time to come back until I finished. Get this though, the guy liked my work so much he didn't give a F*#k, he told me to call him back in 6 weeks to reschedule, I suggested that I do the restaurant overnight next time and he loved the idea of it. Go Figure

If the GM fires him, you are liable.
Just want to say that good employees are not drunks. I can count on a good employee, not on a drunk. That is baggage they bring to the party with them, totally unreliable.
I would not fire him as his condition (if your government is as lame as Oregons) is considered a disability and you could be subject to wrongful discharge, reinstatement and paying for his alcohol treatment plan. But, you could have no work for him. That is different. Can't help it if you have all the business that you can handle. He lacks the initiative to prove you lying.

You have got to love this one. Being concerned about employees being bondable I do insist no felons. So I posted the following on craigslist:
"
Will train. Must have reliable transportation and able to lift 50 lbs. No druggies, alkies, and no ex-cons."
I received the following email today: "hay ashole you dont pay enough to ask for those requirements some ex-cons serve this county in the battle field b atch what have you done for this country"
Anybody want to hire someone who seems to need anger management?
I thought it was funny. Tell you though the ad may not be getting many responses and most of college kids who can show up if they don't get invited to some getaway or even a 15 year old but this one gave me a good laugh.

Dealing with unreliable help can be a real headache, especially when you're trying to impress a client.
As for redeeming yourself with the restaurant, honesty is the best policy. Apologize sincerely, explain the situation, and assure them you're committed to finishing the job thoroughly. Offer a discount or some extra service to make amends. customers appreciate transparency and effort.
As for your employee "hanging-you-out-to-dry" I would pull the plug on this guy and replace him asap.
