I joined this forum to get info and learn about the business.  So far, all I've seen are a lot of egos knocking around.  Is there anyone who takes all of this seriously?  I've spent enough money on my business and would like to hear about business things without all of the bull in between.  My question is:   Is advertising in the yellow pages worth the expense?

Welcome aboard seelah!

Yes, a lot of nonsense is sometimes posted but listen and read in-between and you will be educated on this site.

Yellow pages seem to work better in some areas than others. Large cities seem to have so many telemarketers that you only have to go home and a carpet cleaner will call you. But the biggest problem that I see from my position is when the expensive yellow pages kicks in for you many carpet cleaners have very little idea how to impress or sell on the phone. Eventually losing the sale especially if you have an answering machine. Potential customers will keep calling in yellow pages until they get a real live person.

I also hear that a lot of price shopping goes on with yellow pages. If you don't have a good sales pitch the lowest price gets the work.

She just flamed everyone in here.... listen lady no one wants to give info away for free.... Some of us have paid MONEY to get here where we are... Some of us have had all the good and bad experiences to teach us along the way....

I'll drop a hint but you better read between the lines...info should not be given out on a silver platter you got to work for it...

after that slam you just posted I think you'll fit in just fine....

My question is Seelah, if you have spent a lot of money on your business does this include any advertising. What have you done so far and what method of equipment do you use for carpet cleaning.

Welcome aboard   Give us a chance we might grow on you.

I hope you can read between the lines....cuz I ain't going to spell it out for you

Hey Steamer, you love that quote button don't ya?  Yes, my business included advertising.  I was just curious about the yellow pages.  Thanks to Carpetologist for answering.  I'm using newspaper ads but most of my jobs have come from referrals.

Steamer

What happens if seelah comes to clean your rugs and this person is a woman? Better get your uniform and cologne ready. The shoe is on the other foot. Remember what happened when Jannette LaRue met nightrider...they buried him.

Seelah, Carpetologist is 100% right. Do yourself a favor and stop advertising in the newspaper cause it don't work. Unless you can afford to keep throwing it out the window and hope that it does in a couple of years.

I used the yellow pages once...for a year...and I didn't get too good of a responce...I found it much more profitible to use coupon mail outs like advo or some of the local ad mail outs...most of the time some of big franchise outfits will have the bigger ads in the yellow pages and will get much more responce than the smaller ads that people like us have...I'd look for some of these mailing companies that will let you do as few as 10-20 thousand in targeted areas and give them a try...and don't be afraid to ask any regular customers for referals...word of mouth is still the cheapest and the best...JMHO

BTW, someone mentioned "answering machine"...who uses them anymore?...I work alone, so I don't have an "office staff"...just a cell phone and call fowarding...I just foward my business line to my cell phone and no matter where I am, my clients ALWAYS talk to me in person...much easier to book jobs that way

I usedthe Yellow Pages, 2 1/4 x 4 1/4 ad cost me $ 330.00 in English per month and another $ 330.00 in French, per month  in Quebec it's a law to advertise in French, even if you have no French customers. The money that was comming in paid the Y.P, Winter months, came from my pocket. With all that said, I still would try it again somewhere else.

Yellow pages doesn't work here either. I spent about 4,000 last year and got 1 hit ( of which was already a current customer but she was looking for our number) The only time it works is in disaster restoration. Newspaper doesn't work here either. you need to focus on your current client lists and pound the pavement. waste no money on ads and spend your advertising dollars handing out flyers and business cards.

Well, I am not experienced in CC but am just getting started.  I do own a Maid Service biz and YP is HUGE for us.

I wonder if YP is only good if you spend enough to be a major player (big bucks considering top dog in my market is 2 page full colour)... but what do you all think... if you are in the first 5 pages (maybe 1/2 page full colour) does it drive business?
