I have carpeted stairs and the annoying problem that i am having is the nails coming up  and having to step on the when going up the stairs so and having to keep my rubber mallet handy. Any suggestions anyone?

Rotova:  First of all there should be no nails on the steps if it was installed properly on the tack strip if it is over pad. If it is it sounds like that the installer stapled it onto the steps rather than stretch it in.  If it is a rubber backed maybe they stapled  instead if glueing.  I cannot go farther because I do not know the particulars. Guitar

well it is when the built the house the plywood or lumber was nailed in the center of the support going down the stairs.anyway i just need to know what to do upon pulling the stair carpet back to make repairs should i just cut it at the tuck in or cut it at the top and pull back about 2 stairs of carpet then make repairs.

You should not have to cut anywhere.  I doubt that the stairs were put in all in one length.  You should go to the bottom take vise scripst or needle nose pliers and disengage the carpet or start at the top. Is it a loop or tufted carpet that make a difference on the removal.  I need more info.Guitar

the type of carpet is the builders grade nothing really expensive and i cannot go to the bottom i have a basement and the stairs have been covered with sheet rock so i will have to pull them from the top i guess.
