I notice most of the large carpet cleaning companies in their ads for new employees seem to emphazise only one thing.  Technician wanted will train must have good sales experience.  I guess the cleaning is not as important as selling unwary homeowners what they don't need.Guitar

Your smart Doug, you went from the up selling topic to a new topic disguised as once again up selling.

Some Big companies charge cheap just to get their foot in the door for that very reason up selling. Are they taking into consideration what the customer really needs. Probably not. Money is there motive and nothing else.

What about the independent guy who does up selling for the same reason to make more money. Does it mean he is also going to rip the customer off. Who can say, so what I am reading is that you feel you are better because you have a clear conscience because you do not up sell what you think they don't need.

Selling is a part of your business whether you do it on the phone before you enter the home or once your in there. You do it they do it, it's part of marketing and making a living so get over it.

Now don't get mad at me like you I am giving my opinion.

Adwa:  I don't get mad I get even.  I can understand your point of view.  You don't care how they sell it as long as they sell it .  Because you sell it. My point is deception.  Wouuld you be happy if your mechanic said you need brakes everytime you got your oil changed?? After all  he is the professional right??Guitar

Adwa;  I don' recall stating anywhere that I am better than anyone else.  It is misleading statements like that that create the problems.  Conscience??  I guess that may play a part as I see the people I work for and I like to be able to look them in the eye not turn and run!!!  I not going to go any farther with this it is a lose lose situation.Guitar

I do want to chime in that when you sell something that you really do beleive in, you totaly avoid the slick shadiness that so many salespeople have clinging to them.  I think tacticaly talking down upselling to the customer can make you look like a standup guy that they want to continue doing business with.  I personaly hate people trying to sell me something.  I want the job done that I need done, not a sales call.  Pull vs push.

Doug

You didn't state anywhere that you were better than anyone else, I said this is what I was reading, in other words this is what I felt you were saying. If this is misleading to you then I stand corrected.

I understand that upselling can be misleading, but it also can be done with the right intension's. How stupid do you think the consumer is. I might buy those brakes the first time because yes he is the professional and I would take his word for it but how many times can you be bitten before you realize you have been stung.

so selling gard is a bad thing???? selling deo to people with pets is a bad thing...selling extra rooms is a bad thing....selling more furniture cleaning is wrong

The customer can always say no.....I can tell that doug is a little weak at sales.. try it you'll like it... just make sure you give value for service...

Selling Deodis in the basement isn't wrong...they really do need it.....I sell things I believe in

I'm just saying pull vs push, without directly mentioning a service you can get people to understand that they need the service so that they are the ones to ask you if you can provide it.  That way it is "their idea".
