Hello all, new to this site as well as the business.
A friend of mine has a carpet cleaning business that he started 5 years ago. He is also in the national guard and is being deployed to Iraq for 15 months. He made an offer to me to buy his business and I have been doing research on the business and stumbled across this site. I was hoping you guys could tell me what you think about his offer and a little bit about the carpet cleaning business.
I currently own a lawn care business that I started 3 years ago and its doing great and steadily growing each year. So running a business is nothing new to me.
Anyways, some info on my friend's business:
He said he is grossing around $110,000 for this past year. He has a newer Ford E-350 with a truckmount and portable in it (as well as a bunch of other things that I have no idea what they are, yet  ). He is offering me the van along with all the equipment for $13k. The stipulations of the offer are that once he gets back from Iraq, I turn all of his customers back over to him. But I get to keep all the new customers that I get over the 15 months. I also will be keeping all of the equipment/van. He is going to buy a whole new setup when he comes home.I would also keep my lawn care business and have my father in law help me out with both businesses but mostly the lawn business.
So the questions I have are:
How long does it take to learn the ins and outs of this business? (I have 2 months to work with him until he is deployed) Is $13k a good deal for everything I'm being offered? Would you guys take someone up on this offer if you were just starting out? These are all the details I have for now. Hopefully this is enough info for you guys to help me out with my decision. Sorry for the long post but thanks for your help.

Bigslimdog This sounds like a very good offer, just be aware, there are not usually "contracts" with carpet cleaning, even though your friend may teach you some ropes, you will have to prove yourself to all clients. When he aquired his current clients, he sold himself and his business, you will have to do the same. What he is offering you is the first chance at his contracts.not guaranteed work..Also, a good name takes forever to get, a bad one takes no time.. Think about dividing up the assets from goodwill, you don`t pay tax on goodwill. (here in Ont. anyway) Good Luck! Excellant price and opportunity if you want into this business. You can learn most of what you need to know operationally in 2 months. The marketing and getting good at it is what takes time. If you pass this up, the cost will be much greater at a latter time.I still believe that a carpet cleaning business offers one of the best opportunities for independance and profit out there today. ------------- Inventor of the Teflon Wand Glide and the Turboteck Rotary Air Duct Cleaners for TMs. |

Hi and welcome. I think you should be careful here.
sounds like a good deal on the equipment bad deal on the clients. if you are decent and hard working, the clients won't care if you use a bucket and mop to clean their carpets. they care about exactly what you care about. will this guy treat me fairly and do a decent job. that said, I would work with him on one conditon. you show me the ropes and I buy the equipment and that's it. He needs you, but you do not need him. you can always find more equipment. maybe his is a good price but it's not a fire sale price. .what if you work real hard. harder than him and the clients love you and not him. then he gets half your gravy for what? for being there? no. I don't think so. you're bailing him out. he don't want the old ,, he want new and he's gonna feather his nest on your sweat. don't do it. if you believe in yourself, tell him what I told you. if you haven't enough confidence to do this, what the heck are you doing in this biz. Go work at dennys' peace |
