Topic: Please remove your shoes!
Posted By: RotoClean
Subject: Please remove your shoes!
Date Posted: 02/October/2006 at 6:08pm
I scheduled two appointments today where the ethnic culture is customary not to wear shoes in the house.  These homes are large in size and with some difficult spots.  I want to oblige, but I am concerned about personal safety (slip & fall) because of the loss of traction (my own shoes).

Any suggestions on how to accomodate this?  I know "booties" are available, but will they suffice for what needs to be done to keep me on my feet?  I don't want to say anything offensive about the "carpets are being cleaned anyway!"

Thanks in advance for your replies!

The answer to your problem is very simple...

THE     CUSTOMER     IS     ALWAYS     RIGHT

I had a few of those requests once in awhile. I tell them that it's the company's policy to keep my shoes on at all times, Because Company's liability policy will not allow me to work without shoes.!! ...Then let them decide if they want the job done or not.

Carry a copy of company polices with you, of course make sure that one of your policies is that the technician must wear shoes so that they comply with your libility/workers comp insurance requirements. In reality we should be wearing safety shoes of some sort while cleaning/moving furniture etc. for our own protection.

We just tell the customer we will not risk our technician being electrocuted. No one has had a smart ass response to that yet. Booties will taake care of that problem.

You have a point Ninja.. If you think of it this way -- without customers to clean for what would you do??? They do hire you.. Everyone looks at it differently.

I bend over backwards for customers.

I packed up all my stuff.. After the customer said she was satisfied.

Then she asked if i coudl do 4 small mats... Now i have to hookup again, and i did with no quibbling... She didnt tip me but it was a 250 clean..

She hired me, she's the boss when I'm in her house.. That's how i look at it.. And with that attitude you will make more $$$ in this biz...

Well, thats different John. Thats not the kind of situation Im talkin about. If that was me in your position..I wouldve done the same thing...Cause the custy just GAVE you more work and youre gettin paid to do it.

What I meant was..For ex: When you get to the house and she claims that the last cleaner move ALL of furnitures, bed, cabinets ect. outside to the yard...and did it for FREEE. Then she starts dictating on how you should clean and what Chems you should use...Are  you the Professional or is she??...Will you still listen to her now?..IS she still "Always" right??....HELL NAW!

Ninja, I agree with you, customers can be a pain in the ass most of the time, but they DO sign the checque, and that makes them your boss for the time you clean their carpets.......just like I'm the boss ( and always right ) 'cause I sign the checques at the end of the week for my restaurant employees, BUT I'M STILL AN a**hole TO THEM....

If you don't think the customers is always right..........just remember the way you acted when you bought your cleaning equipment , I'm sure you were an ass too and thought you were always right....

Well I don't know about anyplace else...  But here workers comp will not Cover any injuries in the home if your not wearing proper foot wear..  Foot wear is to be worn at all times.

Rick;

"If it were me"........., I would wear shoes for my own protection,..and theirs as well.

The old saying; "The customer is always right" does not hold true in today's liability market, and/or good business common sense either.

Just MHO.

Thankx everyone ...

But Ed, you hit the nail square on the head!  I spoke to my insurance carrier and he said it was a wise idea to keep my shoes on.  If I were to injure myself from not wearing foot protection, "the liability becomes that of the homeowner, and possible negligence on my behalf."

The solution is simple and has been agreed upon by the customer after explaining the liability factor.  I will do the inspection with booties on, then proceed with the cleaning with booties off.  Everyone's happy! Embarrassed

I do have to admit that explaining the liability part was more than simple.  The customer is the wife of my general physician (doctor), and it was relayed to him that his office would be by first stop if anything happened!

Rick;

Thanks.

I would still suggest that you put it "in writing" (for documentation) on the bill.  It is always surprising how many very intelligent individuals --"forget"about their agreements or what they said---when confronted in court whenever it concerns,.......Money.

QUOTE:  "I don't recall saying that, your Honor".

Just a suggestion.

Ninja........my mother always told me "don't argue with the dull and ignorant "( especially the retarded ones ) because they too have a story to be told............Besides your shoe problem , do you have another interesting tale to tell.........Did anyone ever ask you not to smoke, or how about not to eat food in their establishment , were you ever refused to use the toilet in a restaurant unless you order something , how about paying for your gas first because it's past midnight..............BESIDES ME........AND NOT TAKING OFF YOUR SHOES.......... WHAT ELSE BUGS YOU ABOUT LIFES HARDSHIPS

Finally! somthin I can agree with you on.

"Besides your shoe problem , do you have another interesting tale to tell"

I never had a "shoe problem". And yes, I have ALOT of interesting tales to tell. Just wait for my much anticipated book coming out soon titled "In the Life of a Carpet Cleaner".

"BESIDES ME........AND NOT TAKING OFF YOUR SHOES.......... WHAT ELSE BUGS YOU ABOUT LIFES HARDSHIPS "

Nothing really "Bugs" me about life really (not even you..believe it or not). BUt I do wish times can slow down a bit. 24 hours in a day is simply not enough for me to get things done.
