Subject: Hi to all-Newb question

I am planning on starting a biz with some hands on training given by an experienced cc.

Sorry if this will bore some but really need some help on deciding which portable to buy, either a self-contained unit/walk behind(16inch path) or  one with a wand.

I will be doing mostly residential work as well as boats, rv's, cars etc.

My initial thought was with a wand but this salesman who I somewhat know, is pushing the self contained, saying it's quicker, does uph.,  does a good job and is narrow enough. (a special extractor may also be purchased for stairs, uph. etc.) What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

Forgot to mention, you can attach a 15 foot or so hose and a wand to the self contained if you wished, apparently giving you the best of both worlds. HMMMMM.

Personnaly, i would not recommend a self contained. Although i do not clean i have seen lots and lots of these machines (and have cleaned with them)

They have great benefits in a larger location such as an office, hotel etc but I feel they do not lend themselves to a residential setting. A portable with a wand will be able to get into more places with greater ease.

Just my opinion

I am going to assume you are talking to people in a janitorial store and not a carpet cleaning specialty store. They tend to offer self contained units more often than not. You will find that the self contained may be too cumbersome in small areas such as boats, RV's, homes and not as powerful in pressure and suction as a box extractor such as the http://www.kleenkuip.com/portables/esteam_ninja.htm - Ninja or http://www.kleenkuip.com/portables/esteam_stormchaser.htm - E1700 .

If you still wish for self contained you will find many on our website new and http://www.kleenkuip.com/used_equipment/used_equipment.htm - used or feel free to call me and we can discuss.

I think a lot of those self-contained units look like the kind of thing that customers could rent for themselves. It's better to be outfitted with stuff that looks like it requires an experienced technician to operate it.

they very well could rent one  at Home Depot etc. (probably not as good of one)

but it's your job to convince potential customers that seeing as how you are a trained professional that sucks rug day in and day out that you are going to do a better job in less time and you will have a number of assorted spotters and know how to get their carpets looking like new again

How would you clean the second floor of a house with a walk behind and only 15 ft. of hose/let alone carry it in the house. Talk to Ted.
