There is nothing wrong with Rotobrush as long as that's not all you are using.  Rotobrush works great in flexduct, but as soon as you get into the main supply or return run you are either going to leave a lot of stuff in there or spend all day getting MOST of it out.

If you are going to do a good job cleaning ducts, you need negative air with at least 2500 cfm with filters in place (not FREE AIR).

There are a lot of good truckmounts out there if you are will to spend the money.  a less expensive alternative is portable negative air machines.  Abatement Technologies makes great stuff.  Nikro Industries is also very good, but I like the features on the Intellivac by Abatement Tech.

I speak from experience.  My advice would be to get a good Portable by Abatement or Nikro.  You will also need one of the air compressor tool packages from them.  If you are planning on doing residential work, it is well worth the investment to pick up a used Rotobrush on Ebay.  The combination of Negative air with the Rotobrush works great for residential or small commercial jobs.  You shouldn't have to pay more than $2500 for the Rotobrush and make sure it is the complete package including a video inspection camera.  That should save you about $2000 from not having to purchase a camera from the other manufacturers.  If you have a used Rotobrush you probably don't need all of the brushes and tools offered by the other guys either.

Just my two cents worth.  I hope this helps.

To Do a Proper Air Duct Cleaning Job with "Negative Air" it takes a minimum of 4000 CFM.  Anything less does not do the job and you wont get dirt out of the vents, you will be wasting your money.  You also really need two people to do the job and the proper way is with Bladder bags to section off the vents.  The Labor is twice as expensive, that is why people us the portables.  But it does do a good job.   Negative air is called the "Push \ Pull " method because you have to hook a vacuum up to the main, block off all the vents and put bladders to section of areas.  So that (Vacuum) is the "Pull", The Push is you need either a skipper ball or mechanical brush to push sweep the dirt, that's the "Push".  So it is like sweeping, you Push the Brush\skipper ball down the vent, the light dirt flows all the way back to the vacuum while the heavier dirt travels X amount of feet then falls to the base of the Vent.  You then Push the Brush\skipper ball down farther the vent,  and repeat the process untill the dirt gets to the Main.   So if you have a Negative air machine with 4,000 CFM, your Lift is probably only 5 Inches.  In the Rotobrush, you have 160-180 CFM and about 80 inches of lift and in the DuctBrush you have 200 CFM and 100 inches of lift.  The movement is a fluid just like water.  If you have a fire hydrant and you open it, alot of volume of water comes out, but shoots only a short distance.  If you restrict the water flow like with a hose nozzel, a tenth the water will have 100 times the pressure and shoot much farther.   The Rotary Air Duct cleaning machines clean at the source just like a standard vacuum or Carpet cleaning machine.  Rotary source duct cleaning machines require much less CFM and more Lift.  Where the opposite is true for Negative air, it needs High CFM (Because the source of the vacuum is at the other side of the home) and less lift.  How the DuctBrush or Rotobrush work is that in it rotates a brush at the source.  Behind the brush is a vacuum nozzle that catches the disrupted dirt.  There are some comments about larger vents, and it is true that there is problems with larger Main returns becuase they are larger than the brush, however the same holds true with a negative air brush.  The difference is many negative air systems use Skipper Balls (Air Balls with Compressor) to agitate the dirt in the larger vents when this problem arises.  This Can't be done with the Rotobrush, but the Skipper Ball can be used with the DuctBrush becuase it uses a Compressor.  And it does a good job.  The best source for skipper balls is http://www.skipperballs.com/ - www.Skipperballs.com   , and the equipment at   http://www.shaftway.com/ - www.Shaftway.com  or http://www.rotobrush.com/ - www.Rotobrush.com  .  Many Techs use the Rotary Air duct cleaning machines becuase it takes half the time and labor.  That is why they can advertise at much cheaper prices.  I realize that other people's intentions are good, but it is the man behind the machine that counts.

ROTOBRUSH is not a reliable machine. It does not have enough suction power and/or big enough intake to properly clean supply and return trunks. Also, if you run into turning vanes, you're stuck. That's without counting on the fact that you have to carry the 'wagon" all over the place, and many homeowners don't leave you much space.
Best shot is a true NADCA compliant system. Air-Care has some really good stuff, very powerful vacuums, and the cost is pretty much the same, if not less.

I never use a Rotobrush for cleaning ducks but it is very inadequate for cleaning ducts.
On the other hand, if you are comfortable with doing a half-assed job because the customer can't really see in the ducts then go for it.

I hear that BP has plans for using a Rotobrush to clean ducks, sea gulls and pelicans.

I wonder if it has enough power to suck that smug attitude out of the brits.  This could be payback for the Boston Tea Party.  They just never got over losing the war so badly.

We purchased a Rotobrush system and use it to supplement our cleaning services but usually we only find the system powerful enough for cleaning dryer vents and small four and five inch supply lines in residential, we use truck mount systems for the rest of the cleaning. Not to bash the Rotobrush but when it comes to providing a quality cleaning service it has it's limits.

I don't see the use in using a rotobrush in conjuction with skipper balls:

If you are setting up your 'real' vacuum to do the main trunk anyway with bother using the rotobrush for the runs.
