S.C. Johnson came up with a great idea a few years back. They package their 18.9L of floor finishes, detergents, etc in a bag in box. Throw out the bag and recycle the box. Some of the CC chemical manufacturers should follow.

Way less plastic than a pail.

Dupont tried it years ago

and nobody was buying it

I've got 30 gals of some old Dupont prespray downstairs in bags that I got for $60 (well actually bardered with local supplier)

old but works good

not the safest stuff in the world

I don't care what it comes in really, but I agree the bags don't take up as many garbage bags as the 1gal jugs or 5gal pales

Of course we have curbside recycling. In our city, it's for residential only. Businesses must bring theirs to the depot at the landfill site.

cmaster the shame of recycling in our business area is there is none. You can through out what ever you want. I once asked if we could have recycling and they did it on a trial run and felt it wasn't worth it. I can't believe the amount of plastic and cardboard I throw out and they say it's not worth the expense.

I've heard that it can be profitable for private companies if they can get enough businesses to participate in a program. The problems seem to be convincing enough companies to participate.

They do have a product that comes concentrated in a little plastic pak. I think it is called Enviro Pak.  I thought it was a great idea, no jugs just open a pak and put it into the water. There small enough to fit in your front pocket but it didn't take off.

Airkem makes A125 in a water soluble pack. They also make several other products the same way.

I can't answer for everyone but I can tell all of our 4 litre jugs and 20 litre car boys are recylclable. (Usually they just have to be rinsed out). Normally if you look at the bottom of the jug, if you see a number inside of a triangle - it is recyclable.

Here we recylcle both new and used drums, all of our cardboard is returned and our waste contractor will show us where to go or who to call for recylcing. I know in Peel Region there are 3 waste depots where you can take your material.

I would suggest that if you call your municiaplity or region they will have ample information on where you can go. If you use the services of a waste contractor they can be helpful.

We at KK offer a bulk fill-your-own bottling station. It never went over.

We also attempted to take returns and remove the labels and wash them out.

  • We were accused of using used jugs
  • It cost us more for cleaning labour than the jug is worth

Now you can purchase Portion-Pac chemical in small bags. This not only makes sense for the dump site but it also allows your operators the exact amount needed with no waste + cheaper shipping due to concentrations. Guess what? It never went over.

I guess people in general take a long time to change attitudes. We see this also in our sales of safer, less toxic products. People always ask "What's New?" yet are rarely interested.

The one that gets me is a company developed plastic bags filled with cleaning solutions that actually dissolved when put into water and solution. Concentrated, proportionately measured and no waste to go to the dump.

I guess the world is just not ready for it yet. Maybe they should have hired nightrider as their marketing wizard.
