Smarter Image Hotlinking Prevention
Excerpt by Thomas Scott

Hey! That’s mine!
Most web professionals are all too aware of the problems caused by hotlinkers. Leechers. Bandwidth thieves. People who use images hosted on your web server on their own pages.

For some lucky people who don’t pay by the gigabyte for the amount of data they transfer, that's not too big a deal. Who cares if some little-trafficked weblog uses your photograph of snow falling in New York?

For other sites, however, it's a much bigger problem. If a 100K JPEG is hotlinked on a site that gets, say, 1,000 hits a day, that’s 100MB of data transferred from your site without a single person actually visiting your site. If you have only a few gigabytes of transfer available per month — or worse, pay money per gigabyte — this can add up. And if someone were to leech an entire gallery from your site …

Get the idea nightrider???

One nefarious way of getting those images in this forum would be to download them to your own computer... upload them to your own website... THEN link.  You can also get a free image hosting service (such as fotopic.net) to avoid setting up a web page.

This is usually not (legally) acceptable...however, it gets the job done.  That being said, not every webmaster hosting such an image in the first place is the actual originator or copyright holder of said image... even though they often give it their own watermark. The moral delemina is yours alone.

Those sites (the funny picture sites) operate to get revenue: banner ad clicking, paypal donations, subscriptions... so posting a link to the image will comply with thier (the website operator's) wants, and still get your point across.

SOME sites don't even allow deep linking (I think it's called) which points to a page deep inside thier site (ie: not going through the Home page).  The reason for this?  Most of their begging for donations, subscriptions or 'vote for us' or 'click on our banner ads if you love us' pleas are on the home page.

Trouple with deep linking in a forum post is: many people (err.. OK... ME at least) are too lazy ('specially w/ 56K connections still) to click on every bloody one, so perhaps pick & choose carefully.

enough rant/lesson for one day.

(gratuitious self-promotion here: go visit MY free photopic site... ALL original photography (with NOTHING to do with cc-ing): http://allen3231.fotopic.net/ - http://allen3231.fotopic.net/
