Can anyone tell me if there is a solution to this problem? Gasoline and match is getting old too for you time wasters. I recently cleaned carpet for a new client. The carpet is clean but it is still discolored. For example, she has a large area rug that covers all but about two feet ratious of the carpet. If you pull the rug back you will notice the carpet being extremely darker than the carpet under the rug. She bought the house 4 years ago and this is the first time she has had the carpets cleaned. No one wears shoes in the house and its a non smoking residence. She does light the occasional candle but says its not an everyday thing. Another thing I noticed is she had moved some furniture and there is an outline of dark coloring. Almost looks like filtration black dust from the furnace in which she had that bad too. No jokes but this client is a keeper and If anybody has a solution I would greatly appreciate the knowledge on how to handle this. Thanks

What kind of backing does the area rug have??
What type of carpet is it ? I will bet it is one or the other causing the problem! Edited by Hammy - 08/September/2007 at 9:21pm |

Whatever explanation you decide to give her, the main thing is that you will not correct the problem. Just forget it. If that carpet has been down for most or all of the wall-to-wall carpet's life, then it was protected from the normal color change that any carpet will go though just by being exposed. If there are hard filtration lines around the areas normally covered by furniture, then that's a clear indication that her carpet has been filtering out a lot of crap in the air as it moved under those furniture pieces. Any carpet that was completely protected from that process will look different. On top of that, it's likely the backing of the area stained her carpet anyway.
I'd recommend you go to your supplier, get the card of the Carpet Inspector they most highly recommend, and give it to your client. Explain to her that it is an unavoidable consequence of having something flush to the carpet for years at a time, and stress that it is irreversible. Invite her to get a second opinion from this Carpet Inspector, who will tell her the exact same thing using more technical terms and generally sounding like the expert he is. Hopefully, she'll realize it is in no way your fault or failing. The real lesson she should learn is that putting area rugs on top of wall-to-wall carpet is stupid. |

Reality is that I replace my carpet about every 5-6 years, and I run a carpet cleaning business. I dont care if you do a voodoo dance over your carpet, when 200 pound people walk on a carpet day in and day out, it wears out. When a dog pisses in the carpet 60 times in the same spot in two years, most carpet cleaners cant do much about it. The sun will burn your face in one hour. Why do you think the sun shining in a patio door will not damage carpet in a few years to the point of no return. Jees I appreciate some of you thinking carpet cleaners are gods but jees, enter reality into the room. No we cant fix it for $59 for three rooms.

I can remove more spots than you can.
