Is knowledge a good thing or bad thing? You cleaners in the GTA are very fortunate to have the likes of Lee Senter, Ted Harding and Jim Darling just a call away. Any one of these people would drop waht ever they are doing to help out when you are in a bind. But guess what?? These guys just didn't wakeup one morning with all this knowledge or maybe the did? They had to spend time and money and sacriface to get where they are. I realize that nothing has changed form before the wheel was invented I've been there. I introduced many new things yearsd ago to my little one horse town. On location drapery cleaning. The dry cleaning companies wanted me banned from town. On location drying, restoration companies and some adjusters thought I had escaped from an instituation. Spot dyeing that went over like a lead balloon. I started a consulting company at least that was what I thought it was. Wrong. all I did was argue with carpet stores who we selling the wrong carpet to people, with insurance adjusters because their favourite company had expanded their scope by 99%. So as you can see I turned the very people who I depended on for business against me because of their lack of knowledge in their own field of expertise. Then their was my wife who always asked the same question. When are you going to charge for all this agravation? Today I sit and watch the world go by because buls**t still baffles brains. But people who use our services know one thing we don't use excuses we find solutions to your problems. Knowledge is still the biggest threat to some people. I guess I have said enough and I could probably reprint this in ten or fifiteen years because somethings never change. I will still not know how to spell.

I know what you mean Doug. These days a couple of my best customers are my competitors. Sooner or later I'll be bidding against them. What will I do, I don't know. |

Lee: The one benefit to having an employee leave and start to competeing against you if there are any, is hopefully they will remember everything they were taught and if so their pricing shoud be inline. I think that is better than the competition that bought a machine at the pawn shop. Some former employees soon tire of all the the behind the seen work that goes with keepong them busy and soon tire of being selfemployed and just want a secure pay cheque.

There is academic knowledge, practical knowledge which is all
very well and good but what we lack the most is the business knowledge
to make use of that knowledge without working like dogs.
There are many kinds of knowledge available to us all but we if have closed minds we tie one hand behind our backs. |
