I was recently emailed by someone claiming to be moving from Louisiana to my town.  She claimed to have 15 10x14 rugs that she wanted cleaned.  Problem was, they're in possession of a shipping company there in Louisiana that doesn't take credit cards.  So she wanted to advance me $1200 on her credit card and have me wire transfer $1800 to the shipper to get the rugs here and then she would reimburse me and pay for the cleaning when done.   I said go back to Nigeria!  Just thought I'd let my fellow carpet cleaners know to beware of this scam that is obviously being tried with other cleaners.

Update: It turns out she's from Birmingham, Alabama not Africa. Go figure eh?

It sounded like a spin-off of the Nigerian scams.  I didn't realize so many people already knew of this.

Same thing happened to me the other day but with a twist. They had AT&T call me because they were supposedly deaf so AT&t offers a service where they type to the opperator and the opperator talks to you. Well, it was the same scenerio. I just emailed them back stating I was going to turn them into the feds and informed them that they needed to know how to spell and write correct sentences.

I've had the real Relay calls before.  Are you saying the AT&T Relay operator in this case was not the real thing?

Sounds like a scam. Anyone who wants you to front money is usually up to no good.

I have received a couple more similar email requests in the last couple weeks.  They're still at it.

Similar, thing happened to me.  I got an email from a lady claiming to be in the hospital,  dying from cancer.  She said, she had several area rugs to be  cleaned and could she drop them off and pay with a credit card later. I refused and blocked her email.

I haven't heard of those kind of scams in Canada; at least not in my area.  But speaking of scams, there was a guys going around here and some of the nearby towns a few years back claiming to be a carpet/air duct cleaner.  He'd call folks up telling them he had just cleaned their neighbor's carpets/ducts and hook them that way.  Then he'd go in with a shop vac and shove the hose down their vents while he rooted through their belongings.  One of the worst cases we heard of his, he nabbed some old lady's stamp collection and charged her upwards of $1500 for next to no work. . . and she paid.  I can't remember the guy's name or aliases off hand, but I'll post them if I can find the information.  This all happened in BC, Canada.
