    Posted: 28/January/2010 at 9:19pm
Dealing with this Chicago winter again this is the 2nd night of a frozen pressure water hose. I am thinking of throwing an electric blanket over the hose reel between jobs. Would that work or any better ideas. The hose reel is back by the back door of a chevy express van. the hose froze in 30-50 minutes between jobs.

Thanks,
Ed

I live in Montreal Quebec Canada where the winters get down to -30 at times. what I used to do is take the hose off the reel in 100 foot lengths and before leaving a job to the next one, I would fill up a 5 gallon bucket with very hot water and roll the hose up inside the hot water. In -30 the water would keep the hose from freezing for 2 hours or more. This was back in 1985, my truck was not insulated and I had a low budget for everything

Hi Ed,

You might not even need to throw an electric blanket on it- a thick insulated blanket should do the trick. If it doesn't here is what I would do as a low cost temporary way to keep the back of the van warm enough so your solution hose doesn't freeze.
Go to a camping store (Walmart might have it) and purchase a propane heater for 60 bucks- get the one that uses the small green cans of LP. One of those running will keep it aboove freezing for sure. Do YOUR part in the safety arena by securing the heater so that it doesn't fall (even if it does it has automatic shutoff)  and roll your window down for a few seconds every half hour or so.

When winter camping I sleep with one on all night and I have never had any problems with ventilation or fires.

running propane in the back of a van bro?  Im not sure thats legal or safe

can you winterize the hose quick ed?  it takes 30 seconds for my butler to empty the hose out and replace it with window washing fluid.
I dont predict the future or sell glides, am I allowed on this site?

Maybe not! How do you run washer fluid through your hose? How would I run it though my pump without filling up my water tank and pumping away?! (I own a butler too)

Carpetpro, your butler came with a manual, look under witerization, but here is how to do it.

The butler system came with the hose.  if not, take a garden hose(3 feet long) and connect it to the panel, put that hose into window washing fluid.  Close off the fresh water tank valve and start the pump, this will draw fluid through the machine.  When the pressure hose starts pumping out window washing fluid close the valve.

If your winterizing over night, you must then keep the pump running and allow the pressure hose to fill with air.
I dont predict the future or sell glides, am I allowed on this site?

Run your water out then pour the liquid (blue windshield or orange RV) in your mixtank as soon as the blue comes Your psi hose is safe then head to your next job.

I did the electric blanket only to discover that it had an automatic timer on it.  It took me a while to find anything that wouldn't shut off automatically.

Take a couple lengths of hose off the reel and keep them up front where there is heat on those cold days.  We work in similar conditions as you do and that is what we do, never had a freeze problems between jobs.  Have had the odd one during a difficult set up.

We found in winter you got to get the rag out of your a$$ and hussel and get those god dam hoses rolled up.  That will eliminate most of your problems?Guitar
