Many people say that we need a higher degree of professionalism in our industry. In fact, that was one of the reasons why the IICRC was founded more than 20 years ago. With many cleaners being trained in these courses for a couple of days, and then calling themselves certified, has much really changed? Or is it business courses that really need to be offered to the cleaning community instead? Business courses are what would get cleaners thinking as a businessman instead . The concepts taught would show the cleaners the reasons involved in covering all costs involved in running a business in a profitable manner, instead of the" I can do it cheaper than the next guy" attitude that is common in the bigger centers like the GTA. Many of us have been technicaled to death on how to clean a carpet, but dont get the training we need to be better businessmen. Many do not have time to take a multi year course at the formal business schools, nor do I think that is neccessary to make a difference to most cleaners. A course that teaches many of the important principals could be done in a couple of months or less at the local colledge level. Do you agree?

Howard Partridge, Chuck Violand, Jon Don and Craig Jasper already have excellent programs for carpet cleaners who want to learn the business side.

I know that, Joel. Many of the principals can be used by the Canadian cleaners as well. What I am suggesting is a class concept to learn so that the students can get one on one attention with the teachers. This would be more indepth than the correspondance courses. Some do well with them, and some do not. I think both should be an option.

That is the same with every professsion or industry. But there is always someone doing it cheaper, with less equipment and calling it the same work!! I have a $30,000 TM and it does good work!!! Another guy comes along with a $1,000 machine and thinks hes cleaning carpet, come on!!
