I just had to post.  I just got off the phone with a Sears telemarketer  who tried to sell me on their Duct Cleaning  service.  I inquired how often should the ducts be cleaned? Answer every 3 to 5 years.  Question to her.  Why do I see your truck at the same house twice in a 6 month period?   It is up to the inspector to determine if cleaning is necessary. You said 3 to 5 years.  answer that is not my job to inspect.  Question. In most cases your truck is at houses that have just sold that is where you are busiest and where you are most often.  Answer.  The new homwowner may be concerned when or if the ducts were last cleaned. You have just answered my question regarding ethics as you clean the ducts over for the new homerowner knowing full well you just cleaned them a few prior.  Answer. Yes but it is a new homeowner.  My answer was new homeowner but not new ducts.  End of conversation she hungup. Just had to share this.Guitar

Poor Girl  ,   I can just imagine how you rattled her brain.

Tell me did you feel good or bad after she hung up on you.

Duct should be cleaned every few years if the filters are changed like they should be. Here in walla walla it should be done more often due to the blowing duct from farming around here, dust storms happen often here, so i guess it really depend on how clean you like to be and where you live.

How often ducts should be cleaned depends on a lot of things...allergies, asthma, pets, smokers, doors & windows open in summer, renovations, etc.

I get this question a lot.  I tell my customers it will probably be 2-5 years (maybe more, maybe less).  I tell them to call me in a year and I will put my video camera into their ducts so they can see if they need the service yet.  I do this for free because I'm such a nice guy and I'm a dumb a$$ and I like to work for free.

No wait, really there are good reasons to do this:
     1. They can see that the ductwork is/is not dirty & they know that I'm not just full of BS.  This helps set me apart from my competition.  there are a LOT of dishonest half-ass duct cleaners.

     2.  When they do eventually need duct cleaning, who do you think will get the work.

     3.  They bring you back in their house every year so they can get a free service.  While you're there, get the other money (carpet cleaning).   What a great way to keep your customers happy & get repeat business.Wink

They ask me how I can afford to offer air duct checks for free.LOL

Great answer up above. I agree that for non-asmatics, in areas without alot of dust, every 3 to 5 years is a good schedule to follow when in doubt. Asmatics can benefit from annual cleaning here in Calgary, because the city is one of Canada's most dusty. That said, I do believe that after you have answered the question wether they should clean it with a no, if they still want to go ahead, I would take their money and do it. At least I will do a good job for them, whereas if the turn to somewhere else, they may not. Agree with Steamer about this being free enterprise.
