For the sake of your business, review and check your business insurance policies. A little over a year ago, I dropped my van off to get some work done on the suspension. the mechanic told me to come back in an hour, so off I went. My phone rang, it was the mechanic telling me my van "had a fire". I figured how bad can it be?
As it turned out- REALLY BAD. While loosening off a rusty bolt with a torch, he managed to catch the interior on fire. EVERYTHING was a write off. My equipment, the van, any personal items, all gone.
Ah, but what the heck, I had INSURANCE!!!!Shouldn't be any problem right?
WRONG.
My van, with its new $3000 transmission, $1500 front end, new rear diff, new front drive shaft (4WD) and over $8000 in the previous 6 months in bills got me $5200.
My equipment, replacement value $13,000 + , by the time it was screwed with by the adjustor, got me a big , fat cheque for $3500.

WHOOPEE!

My little business nest egg that I had so lovingly built up for some expansion, was decimated. I had to borrow bank money to keep afloat. It put a lot of strain on my family life, not to mention the personal toll.

For pete's sake check and review your insurance policies. Be sure to take the time to go over EVERYTHING with the broker. your career and business can "evaporate" in a few moments.

Willy I went threw that a few years back I lost some drying equipment when a place reflooded. At that time I realized if the equipment is over a year old it is worthless in their eyes.  After the deductible I got squat. I see nothing has changed.

Provincially run insurance that covers all mechanic shops too and shop policies. My insurance company went after ICBC and subrogated the claim. The bull$hit i would have to go through to get a couple of thousand more was insane and not worth my time. Great Northern Shield? It only covered their a$$.

I hear you loud and clear Doug. Here I was, merrily skipping away, figuring i had it all covered, when my ass(ets) were out to the northern wind, unshielded.

I'm just on my way out to renew my auto insurance now- I'll pay in cash, Who knew that currency made such rough toilet paper?Wink

Generally liability is the least of our worries.  Workers Comp is set up like a plague that burns you no matter where you run.  Youre entrepenuer (check spelling on that)  spirit is drying up as you are forced into corporate status to avoid workers comp insurance if you are a small biz getting started.  As a mom and pop sole proprietor just getting started in biz, you have to incorporate as an LLC or Inc or pay about 30% of your income in some states towards workers comp insurance alone.  Another trap set to collect more fees from you.  They force you to incorporate and get an exemption to protect you from workers comp.  The only problem is that it  encourages you to remain small, as to grow in business means you would then have to pay workers comp, payroll fees and all the other BS to a payroll company, which is hard to afford.  Thus the new business man without  a million dollars or more is doomed in most cases to fail.  Business lesson number 1....Find a rich bastard to fund your new business to expand Confusedor you will be poor for years to come.
I can remove more spots than you can.
