I can accept that cold calling works. I've met some very talented telemarketers. Any of them will tell you that you project your own insecurities and self-doubt on the prospect, and that's how you lose them. I'm not good at it. I'm not that kind of showman, and I hate relating to people on that level. I project my unease when I try to be Mr. Sales Guy. I'm uncomfortable, so my prospect is uncomfortable. Anyway, cold-calling doesn't work for me. It's like Chinese water torture. No thanks.

People need to find what works for them. It's not hard for me to believe that NR is a tele-tiger. He's got this crazy self-confidence that seems borderline insane to me, but I've found that people often respond positively to that. I don't really get it, but I've seen it work over and over and over. My manager when I worked for ChemDry was like that. He has all this stupid confidence--most people don't even like him--but he has this insane knack for securing work at high prices. Sure, his quality of work was crap, so I snagged a lot of his clients when I went out on my own, but he was great at landing them in the first place. He was by far the most successful employee even though he was the worst worker. He just bought his own ChemDry franchise, and he's doing great.

Anyway, it just makes sense to me that as business people we should be honest with ourselves about our strengths and weaknesses, and maximize the potential of those strengths. For me, I'm great face to face. I build relationships quickly and easily, so networking environments are good for me. I read social situations very well and can adapt easily in most cases. Telemarketing? Sales pitches? Eh, I hate telemarketers calling me, so I hate being one myself. Simple.
