Major 4 alarm blaze on Wicksteed next door to Chemspec.
40 fire trucks and 65 cop cars due to the potential of ammonia at a Cold Storage warehouse.

Industrial fire near Thorncliffe and Overlea area: fire crews on the scene
Wednesday, January 31, 2007 - 08:07 PM
By: 680News staff

Toronto - Fire crews are responding to a five-alarm industrial fire on Wicksteed Avenue, near Thornciffe and Overlea Boulevard.

Toronto Fire Services tell 680News the fire is at a cold storage facility that uses ammonia for refrigeration, and that they are investigating any possible dangers from the chemical.

Hazmat crews have also been called on the scene.

Fire spokesperson, Mike Strapko, tells 680News that residents in the area should stay put for now.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries and were treated on scene for minor burns.

Thick black smoke is forcing police to turn around traffic in the neighborhood.

Five Alarm Fire Carries Toxic Danger
Wednesday January 31, 2007
For the second time this week, Toronto firefighters are doing battle with a stubborn blaze - and this one has turned into a huge inferno that's leaving a hint of danger in the air.

Flames broke out at a cold storage facility on Wicksteed Ave. in the Eglinton and Laird area around 6pm Wednesday. It quickly escalated into a massive five alarm emergency.

The fire has the potential to become extremely toxic because the plant uses ammonia for refrigeration. No injuries have been reported, but traffic is being diverted.

Area residents aren't being evacuated but are being asked to stay in their homes.

Three firefighters were slightly hurt during their efforts to tame the blazing beast. They were treated by paramedics, then returned to pour more water on the flames.

According to the owner of the plant, all his employees were outside by the time the fire srarted to spread.

There's no word yet on the cause.

Flames at a home in the Main and Danforth area on Monday claimed the life of a 75-year-old woman. Authorities believe if a sprinkler system had been installed in her residence, she might have survived the early morning fire.
