Does anyone charge taxes for their service?
What is everyones views on this. Just wondering because the the company that did my carpet a while back did...and as you could imagine, those extra dollars (from charging taxes) could end up paying for most of my fuel expenses for the entire month.

Are you serious! When a business charges taxes on an item they are only collecting taxes for the state they live in , this is later sent to the state. ALL OF IT . You ....can't Tax a customer .... The state is taxing them through you. You are just the collector.
In you think that this could be your gas money ,you are seriously mistaken. Secondly most states do not tax services, but your state may be different. Call your state tax department. The price you charge for cleaning will have to cover all your expense.... Plus giving the state some taxes on your profits. That's why we need to forget about being the lowest cleaner in town and get the prices up there. IMO |

Just giving some input, I asked the same question to someone who does tax law. some states charge sales tax some don't. Mine unfotunatly does. It is usally set up quartely (every three months) unless you acumulate $500 (in sales tax that is) within 30 days. you must apply for a sales tax use licence through your state. I adjust my price to include tax and make a small note on my invoice (all NJ sales tax included). Do the math in what I owe later, 7% not that hard. I do hear that if you charge customers tax without reporting in with the state and if you are audited there are heavy fines and penalties. Not something to mess around with! Adjust your prices accordingly. Good luck to all.

Customers who don't want to pay tax usually are lower income or very frugal people. You want to work for the higher income customer who can afford you price that covers all you expenses and profit and doesn't care if there is a legal tax at the end of it. We found that any who resist paying taxes helps us to be able to fire them as a prospective customer.

If you collect tax and do not pass it on to the state , you are in big dodo. In my state there is no tax on services but on goods such as sale of spotters and rakes etc.

Just a curious question I need answered for the continued development of our carpet cleaners software...
having to do with taxes. Does anyone here have several different taxes that they must charge on each invoice? i.e. County , State, city etc. each having their own percentage?? Or do most of you not have a sales or use tax that you must collect ?? Real curious , Please respond . Thanks !! |

In developing the software for other carpet cleaners I need to find out how many exceptions there are to the general rule. If taxed I believe most have a straight , one shot, percentage . But I am developing this for other areas and other countries at this time. We have a user in Australia and we also have much interest in the UK so different people have different needs when it comes to invoicing.
Just wondering what your tax situations are??? Thanks for any info!!! Edited by danmarck82 - 10/May/2008 at 11:22am |
