Where is Ed York when you need him?  Smile.  Always right here, along with his wife, Wanda (touching heart).  I was in college, working for Steam Services in Fresno, and actually was for a while the Executive Director of International Institute of Carpet and Upholstery Cleaners.  I was a young man, who learned a whole lot about carpet cleaning, and will never forget both Ed and Wanda.  Even today, I use the same training, when looking at carpet - whether purchasing it or cleaning it.  Now, I own with my wife Crossley Family Enterprises (National Interpreting and Captioning Exchange), and am a proud father of four (youngest is 9, oldest is 34), grandfather of 14.  What I learned was basic pricipals of integrity, honesty, hardwork, from the master teacher himself, Ed York.  Because of him, I was on TV (well, a one-minute spot for Steamed Services, for the exact price of a dollar) (smile).  Because of him, I stopped living with my girlfriend and was treated to a surprise marriage ceremony by Judge Goodwin (a friend of Ed's) in the company lunchroom - what a day that was!  I will always remember the round wooden TUITs he would give to people, when they'd say, "When I get around to it."  I will also remember his saying, "If you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance, baffle them with bullsh*t."  Of course, he was a great teacher and friend to folks who worked for him, whom he treated like family.  Miss the Chinese Chicken Salads, once a month on Fridays.  Miss them both (Ed and Wanda) but always they are a part of me.

You know what General Lee , some comments are better gone unanswered....do you Live, Breath, Eat, and sh*t Carpet Cleaning. When you take your beautiful French wife out to dinner ....do you eat on the floor close to your first love......"CARPET" Do you cry when your carpets gets wet or walked on. Heaven forbid if you vomit or piss on it. Do you have a picture of a carpet next to your kids in your wallet. You probably have a swatch somewhere in your pocket, and marvel at it in your spare time. If you think I'm an ass, you're right..I'm an ass wasting my time answering you." But that's just the kinda hair pin I am".( JAMES CAGN

The unfortunate part in all of this Nightrider is that instead of some people learning what to use as a proper preconditioner on Stainmaster, they learn how big of an ass you are.

Most people on this site might think of me as a know-it-all, or a big bag of wind that huffs and puffs and throws out comments of empty innuendo. Most of the guys on this site are just trying to make a living by cleaning carpets, I doubt very much that an array of problems can occur providing simple guidelines are respected. Most of these guys much rather work for themselves that taking on some low paying warehouse work and being subject to the equivalent of a whipping boy. I for one do not believe in the IICRC for the simple fact that they know that intellegence does not run high in some of the invividuals they pray on. Most are high school dropouts trying to better themselves through hard labour to bring an equilibrium to their lives. We do not all excel in a classroom environment and are easily swayed by magazine advertisements stating there are riches to be found in carpet cleaning. The IICRC took advantage of this fact and capitalized on it and made it a very lucrative venture.

As far as stating General Lee is a carpet inspector is the most preposterous thing I ever heard of. He, like all those entertaining you on this site is a carpet cleaner, why is that so hard to understand. When he started in business he was a carpet cleaner, when he bought his car he told the loans officer that he was a carpet cleaner and today he is still a carpet cleaner.

Also referring to General Lee being a  gentleman due to the fact his wife is French, is another unintelligible statement you mmade. Before you say that all of my statements are related to your in the same matter.......you are wrong..........all of my comments are based on interpretative parenthesis thrown into quoted matter of the obscure.

Mr. Steamer, would you be willing to shed some light for the other cleaners? We have a mentor program for the online certifications where we are trying give the education back to the professionals. Just a thought.

Excellent post Joe.

My gawd, imagine Ed coming here and being lambasted for fun by Nightrider.

It would be shameful.

Ed has done too much for this industry to be subjected to that abuse.

I e-mailed him the other night to come over and take a peak. Maybe it was a mistake.

Adwa, you say that most cleaners won't admit they are at fault for any problems with the carpets they clean.

You are 100% right. Look at the response, 95% of carpet is nylon.

Well it is no longer 95%. Olefin is up to about 15-20%.

Olefin is lypophillic and hydrophobic. So these guys use the same prespay?!

I would guesstimate that at least 1/2 of the nylon is 5th generation that is severely affected by high pH presprays. Do you think they even know what pH to keep so they don't strip off the Stainmaster? I bet not.

So you are right, there are a lot of problems created by improper cleaning.

Mr. York is commonly referred to as the “grandfather of the industry”. He is responsible for the creation of what is now the IICRC (started as IICUC or “I SUCK” lol). He also started ICR (International Certification Registry) and STC (Society of Cleaning Technicians) the original monthly carpet cleaning publication. He is also remembered for his famous “Tips and Chat”. He is, in some way, directly responsible for such industry leaders as, Scott Warrington, Jeff Bishop, and Steven Brandt and is the self proclaimed leader of the “Fresno Gang” form the late 70’s early 80’s. He has written hundreds of articles, publications, press releases and manuals. His wife, Mrs. Wanda York and he created the cleaning materials which set the base for nearly every course material currently written used for IICRC and ICR course materials. Oh yes, lets not forget he was also named “Cleanfax’s person of the Twenty century.”

Don’t get me wrong, he is no saint. Mr. York had locked horns with a great number of industry professionals. And as much as he has been praised, he too has been ostracized, outcast, canceled and other wised been the mark of many an ill will. I would be surprised of he doesn’t have an Ed York Voodoo doll or two out there somewhere.

But among all of the negativity he has always looked out for two groups of people; The York clan and the Carpet Cleaners.

Indeed Mr. York has made his mark in this industry. He is currently out of retirement and running York Enterprises, which is partnered with (you guessed it) Principal Focus. His lovely wife Wanda has also made a re-entry into the industry and is assisting in the new ICR approved Online Education Courses sponsored in part by FCSA, York Enterprises and Principal Focus.

He can now be found frequenting the Service Center Online Community site, posting articles and answering questions at www.principalfocus.com

I don't know why everyone thinks I'm against IICRC....I've taken many classes..

I just don't like the way the class are conducted...it's just recalling the facts that the instructor tells you to High Light.....so you actually do some hands on...NO.....you pass the test..wow...Is it anything like it the real world no....Does it make you a professional after a couple classes......hell no...

Adwa you sound like your on someones payroll...thats why you call for Lee...cuz he's heavy in the IICRC thing too...

95% of all carpet is nylon...it ain't that hard...flood work...it ain't that hard...Commercial Carpet Maintenance that ain't hard....Odor Control etc etc...

adwa...I think you are saying I'm inexperienced and cheap(in the nicest way) But Ms. adwa it's only from my experiences I speak...I have done the classes this is why I know you don't need to take them...

Sorry that I'm bad for your business but it's true...Things need to change...I'm for change...lets stop looking at the almighty dollar and really start looking at educating the carpet cleaner....

You wanna learn come be my helper...I can open your eyes

Yes Jock you are right on, I am a woman and Adwa stands for a beautiful person. At least I hope that is what it means. An acquaintance gave me that name years ago.

I am a chemical and textile consultant and that gets me into carpet manufacturing establishments and that also leads me into carpet installation and cleaning problems.

I find this carpet cleaning industry very varied and get to meet many interesting people through claims, not to mention a few who are as dumb as a door nob. I find most carpet cleaners never want to except responsibility for damage they know was caused by there possible inexperience.

Does this inexperience come from lack of education and training Mr. Steamer or are they just not willing to pay for a IICRC course.

Most I've meet through claims want to blame the manufacture, the glue, the under-pad, the fibers, the dye, the installation, the weather etc etc etc. I have never had a carpet cleaner admit he was wrong and screwed up even when it's as plain as the nose on your face. Maybe General Lee who is a carpet inspector can answer me on this one.

I am disappointed that you think I never post anything useful. I said in the beginning that this site can be intimidating. So far Lee was the only one to come to my rescue. It must be because he has a French wife and knows how to be a gentleman. Mixed words was a compliment, ask someone older than you.

Yours Truly, Adwa

What does ADWA stand for. You said you were not a carpet cleaner, what exactly do you do, and why the interest in this forum. I never seem to see any usuful post comming from you, neither any comments. Another thing, I'm very in tune with the human phycological ways of thinking and word construction, You are a woman behind this masquerade of yours.

You have a nice name there Prince......that was my wifes family name, she died in 93, and yes you probably do know me. As for ADWA thanks for the young 50 comment but mixing my words like a 60 year old.........what's that about. for the posts late at night that's not me, I converted my computer to think like me, and even act like me, it even looks like me but it will never be me, cause I'm me, I'm the only Nightrider and nobody else can actually be me.
