Hello

I am looking at getting new carpeting and have always found when researching nylon and polyester carpeting to always go with nylon. Can anyone explain to me what is the difference between nylon and polyester carpeting??

Thanks
Daniel Smith

Generally Nylon has a much better memory and wants to come back on its own when tramped down.

Polyester when down stays down. Nylon will generally give you a better all-around look.

Polyester also has a strong affinity to oil stains that are next to impossible to get out.

In the sales room Poly looks better, but that is the only time it looks better. Nylon as Ted said has the best ability to rebound when you vacuum it or when we clean it. Poly is usually cheaper but has no memory, it is used a lot by home builders because of the cost factor. In my opinion one of the biggesr factors as to people throwing out carpet in favour of hard surface floors simply because they do not like the appearance of the carpet within a year or 2 of buying a new home. Nylon all the way for me.

Polysters are good to look at but requires maintenance as they get dirty very easily where Nylon has better maintenance and can be easily cleans.
Also, most important Polysters are cheaper.

Hi Daniel!
Both nylon and polyester carpets are made from synthetic materials. Polyester carpet is made from recycled plastic bottles. Both nylon and polyester carpet fibers have strengths and weaknesses. In terms of wear and tear, nylon carpet is considered the toughest carpet while polyester carpet can be melt in high heat. In terms of price, polyester is much cheaper.

"UGLY OUT".. I'm sure all Pro CCers have heard of it. It comes from some moron ccer cleaning Polyester carpet. How and why? The last ccer used a high pH alkaline solution (probably a high pH emulsifer) to rinse leaving high pH in the carpet as it dried which leaves a dull appearance. Alkaline solutions will etch poly like acid etches glass. You must rinse out the alk.sol with clear water right away. A perfectly clean polyester carpet will look dull if a alkaline solution is left in it as it dries. It is permanently damaged forever.. Confused I'll take Nylon anyday.
