i have a customer that has velvet chairs i may have to clean next week ...any suggestion...when i dont know i usually just clean with ph4.5-8.5

Personally I would use a dry cleaning method.

You should use a cleaner or prespray that is totally evaporate so you will leave no residue to make the velvet look like a washed cat. Also, have a wire carding brush to groom them with. Always work the velvet in the direction of the nap rather than against
it. This includes vacuuming,brush agitation and extraction. Initial Grooming – Immediately after cleaning each section, you should groom the velvet in the direction of the nap. In other words, brush it down. Do not try to brush against the nap while it is wet. Dry the fabric completely. Final Grooming – Once the fabric is dry, groom the pile against the nap using a Brass Velvet Brush. This will lift and separate the fibers and bring back the soft feel of the velvet. |

Thanks alot guys ...i got the velvet chairs to work out and clean up great ..unlike the previous cleaner who had ruined them last year.. Thanks alot guys

I do prefer dry cleaning,This is some what easy for cleaning velvet carpet...

If they turned out alright, then they were not ruined in the first place. Velvet is not a forgiving fabric. They must have been velveteen, an immatation velvet ( cotton / twill ) I used to make childrens wear back in the 70's and used Velveteen on my Christmas and Holiday line. YES Ted, they can be washed with Tide, as a matter of fact that is the best way to clean Velveteen on a budget ( beside dry cleaning, which doesn't make the fabric any nicer ) laundry soap is just fine.
I cleaned 1,200 Velveteen reception chairs with degreaser diluted 10 to 1, sprayed on the seat and buffed with a car polisher, I lined up 2 rows of 20 chairs facing each other with a 4 foot gap and cleaned 40 chairs every 30 minutes ( naturally I slowed down after about 300 chairs ) but at 2.50 /chair. I was very happy with my pocket money at the end of the day . CASH IS KING.

Oh yeah.....I forgot, I also had over 30 panels of draps ( Blue velvet.....the real thing ) from the same reception hall that they wanted cleaned. They wern't stained or anything just dusty and smelled with cigarette smoke. Not wanting to invest in the dry cleaning, the owner just asked me to do my best for the smell and dust. I brought them to a laundry mat, shoved them into 15 dryers, sprayed Bano in the dryers, let them tumple for whatever 25 cents got me at the time. Took tem out folded them hot, put them in garbage bags brought them back hot as bread, hung them up.....sprayed more bano on them.....called the owners ( I knew the first thing they would do is smell them to cleanliness ) they smelled great.....they were happy.....I was happy.....I charged them a special price of $ 500.00 for 3 hours work .
You never wash Velvet, buy a piece at a fabric store to find out why.
