Anyone have any advice of a good commercial vacuum to pre-vac with? I've been looking at some Oreck's but I'm not too sure about durability with those. Any suggestions?

Dyson... Great machine that will discuss or impress your customers with the way it picks up animal hair.

I've been happy with my Royal. I want to use a vacuum that is powerful and lasts a long time. It also helps that it looks like a commercial vac. I don't want my customers to look at any of my equipment and be reminded of consumer products.

I happen to know that Michael keeps that Royal gleaming with a mirror finish- he polishes it regularly.

No argument against that Royal- it does edges very well and is easy to service. Top-notch company, too.

Make sure you're using a HEPA filtration system on your vacuum. It's another selling point you can make to your customers.

Ive worked in the janitorial business for awhile and if you are not concerned about a customer looking at your vac and saying, "Heck, that cheap ol vac won't do anything, mine is better than that..sheesh...I wonder what kind of carpet cleaning equipment he has??"....then I would go down to a local store and get a Bissell....BOOM!!!! Otherwise, the Royal will last you and it looks great too....

Support your local guys...WAL MART SUCKS!!!

Just some info from my past experiences with Miller Carpet Care back in the mid 70's:

We used eureka commercial vacs (said commercial on it too).  We would check out the customers own vac and if it seemed inadequate it was ok for us to offer the one we brought into the customer's house at a discounted price.  We made a profit, the customer got a great vacuum and of course the tech got his spiff.  Of course we had a new vac on the van so we could keep going to the new job or sell it instead of the slightly used one.

I use hoover wind tunnel with hepa filtration.  I do not sell vacuum cleaners or new carpet.
