Hi guys I am just starting out carpet cleaning, and can't afford a truck mount so have to go with a portable for now until I build my business. I have looked at many portables, but this one seems good to go. I am most interested in all the normal things like VAC, Lift (CFM), heat, but I do want a until that does autofill, and autodump. Both features make it more usable, approaching at least the efficiency of a truck mount as far as filling and dumping goes. Minimizing time. Time = money. What are you thoughts on the Eclipse High Powered Portable Extractor. It can be found below.

Any help you knowledgable folks can provide would be great. Please dont recommend I use a truckmount because I can't afford it. Thanks though. I will using the portable with a Rotovac 360, or RX-20 to clean carpets. Thanks for all your help.

I wouldn't get to hung up on the machine. Some people prefer CFM and some prefer lift. Heat is great if you can get it without pulling to many amps and result in popped circuit breakers. I use a different portable without auto fill and auto dump. I would say on a normal residential job, I dont spend 10 minutes dumping and filling so for me these features may not be important. For you it may be different. Remember, (and this was told to me by a IICRC instructor) carpet machines just quirt and suck. It's what you before you get to this step that make a ton of difference.

Good Luck,

That's what I've been hearing as well Griff.  Sounds like the solutions , and preparation are everything.  The machine just makes the job that much easier.

I spoke to a gentleman today about portable, and he was not to happy with them, however he did use them for 7 years before he actually went to a truck mount.

I like the option in Eclipse to turn off one heater, and still keep the other one going so as to not use another 15-20amp circuit.  I also think about possibly using a generator to make the power instead of the customers power.  This may make the whole truck mount portable thing a non-issue.

Have you lost any job due to having a portable instead of a truckmount?   If so how many would you say you lose in a given year, month, or week?  The guy I was speaking to may have only remember the bad times, when customer pushed him out due to a portable, but I'm going to be using the Rotovac as a marketing tool.

I hope to extole the vitues of the Rotovac Powerwand as a superior cleaning tool negating the need for large, air-polluting, unsecure truck mount system.  Hopefully I will be able to mitigate at least some of the negative feelings of using a portable.

I have looked at the Recoil 3hp, and I can get one for $2150 from a guy, but I like the Eclipse for the money. Anyway.  Talk to you soon.

Griff;

Do you run your RECOIL-3HP System from the truck, or use it in the portable mode?

I use my Recoil as a portable and as far as I know I have never lost a job because of my equipment. But who knows. You can't worry about every job lost because you are going to lose some regardless of what you use. A truckmount will probably make life easier on a carpet job but most people I clean for could care less about what equipment I clean with as long as it cleans. Also by using electricity, I haven't raised my prices due to fuel cost. I live in a fairly small town and most jobs are within 2 - 10 miles. By the time you buy a portable, rotovac, and generator, I'm pretty sure you could buy a truckmount, especially if you look at some used ones.

Good Luck,

Griff.
