I understand acid removes tannin. I just don't understand why.

It seems to go against the general rule of removing an acid stain with an alkaline detergent.

    I don't know of this rule which you are talking about. Rather I hear and have seen that most strong acids have a capability of removing colour in one way or another.

Jeff Cross' guide says to remove acid stains with alkaline and alkaline with acid. This tannin issue appears to be the exception.

Most soil is acidic.
But an acid stain?? One that won't come out?? What kind of stain is that?
