I use distilled water and a PH pen. Why don't you read the instructions on the box? Next you will want to know if you should start the portable before or after you put the water in?

Suggest you dampen the carpet that has the concern in more than one place and apply pressure with the pH paper to get a reading.

P.S.

Don't use your finger or thumb. You could get a reading of yourself with the applied pressure.

No, but the light it throws off helps you see the color of the pH paper better, eh?
