I AM JUST STARTING OUT AND DID A FRIENDS HOUSE TO GET EXPERIENCE. HE CALLED ME TO LET ME KNOW THAT THE CARPET WAS STILL WET A DAY LATER AND IS STARTING TO BECOME MUSTY. IT IS LEVEL LOOP CARPET AND HE WAS IN A HURRY SO I WAS UNABLE TO STAY WITH MY FAN TO LET IT DRY.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO CORRECT THIS? |

Larry,
Sounds like you do not have a powerful enough vac system or it was not working up to par on that day. If it is still that wet you need to extract again and position a blower on it. Since it has started to smell means growth is setting in and will require a spray with a deodorizer or better yet a disenfectant such as Benefect.
Advice
Don't do work for friends...it will always backfire.

Carpetologist, that is very good advice. I recently did a job for a friend and wound up spending 3 FREAKING HOURS on a $60 ticket because they didn't want to buy any of the extras that were required to clean the carpets. So I had to choose between leaving all of the red stains and pet stains or working my ass off for free. Never again will I do a friends house.
Jackson, I hate to say it my friend but it may be too late. I would try Mildocide first but it sounds like carpet sour. You need to get a moisture meter and check the moisture in the carpet and pad. If it's down in the pad, forget it. The pad has to come out and be replaced, the carpet has to be disinfected front and back and that is still no guarantee that the smell will come out. If it comes down to this make sure you replace the tact strip too because that moisture gets into the wood and causes it to rot. You have 72 hours before the carpet is, well, f**kED. Once that moisture sits for 72 hours, then the IICRC standards call for disposing of the carpet. I've salvaged carpets after 72 hours of moisture but it's rare. If the carpets don't dry (and if you have the equipment) you need to get a couple of blowers and a DH and make a vaccum for the moisure. In other words set up your blowers at one and of the room and the DH on the other end of the room and have your blowers blowing the moisture into the DH. Alternatively you can open a window and direct the blowers to blow the moisture out the window but this is not recommended at all, especially on a really humid day. Someone once told me the A/C acts as a dehumidifier but I'm kind of skeptical about that theory. I mean in theory it may work but I've never tried it myself. Above all you need to have your machine checked and if everything checks out you need to rethink your technique. If you are not IICRC certified, the classes make a HUGE difference in your knowledge and ability. |

Chris that's great advice 8 days later!
Chris; stick to ripping off your friends, family and customers!
For somebody that is IICRC certified in water damage you should go back for a refresher! or at least check the post date! Edited by Hammy - 10/October/2006 at 7:36pm |

Hahahaahaha. Wow. Unbelievable! You really are a pathetic individual Hammy... I mean WOW! I don't even know you and you feel the need to respond to every single one of my posts with absolutely no information pertaining to the thread.
Perhaps if you backed off with the flaming and actually offered some educational information you might find others actually respect you. But I know your type, you go out to customers, claim you are the BEST there is and blah blah blah and bash ALL of your competitors. Hahaha. Sad. I'm so glad I didn't get conditioned to think that way. It's very ignorant. I deal primarily with up scale cliental and let me tell you, I'd get kicked out of every home if I went in there with your mentality. I posted on this site because I thought I was dealing with professionals but it's apparent I was sadly mistaken. Edited by chris12345 - 10/October/2006 at 8:03pm |

Chris; educate yourself before you post. Read carefully, don't just flap your jaws. You have alot to learn. Go back and read the first post, then yours.Ted answered the question. Guys like you are a dime a dozen. You come you go! When you have been around the block once on your own come back and give advice. Until then keep HACKING!

Your right! Unfortunately I was in a market for many years that was full of ignorant cleaners. However I have to take offence when someone gives advice on how to answer the telephone.
Cheers!

WHY? Is there nothing you can learn about phone etiquite
that you don't already know or practice? I think you can always learn. I thought I knew it all about approaching the home , setting up , entering etc. Until I went to a seminar and was taught that If you just step back when you ring the door bell and wait so that the homeowner can approach YOU instead of you barging in the minute you have a chance . I realized I had been more or less taking control the minute I was on site, but That is not the way to do it. You should give the customer their Space, and let them invite you in before taking charge of your project. Small issue, but it makes a big difference in how you are perceived and received. ..... . Little things that we can learn from others. |

I dont think theres anything wrong with Chris's advises. Many who've been in the busniess awhile might take offence because it seems like a no-brainer...But!! what about those new guys that are just starting out??? Even the simple little things can make a hugh difference.

yes, what that dude said is true. simply do not work for friends, unless they are paying you . I disagee with his solution since it happened to me.
you over wet and didn[t suck up enough so the pad got wet and stinky. don't put any more liquid in there. get some fans and go borrow a dehumidfier. the fans will wick up the water from down below and the dehum will wring the water out of the air. prob. three days dry time till no smell. in the future, if you got a weak portable, bring a roto with bonnets this will take more water outta the rug and dry it faster Something else you can do it heat your water in a 5 gallon bucket first. get a 1000 watt submersible heater. put your prespray down and roto scrub the prespray into the rugs. this will loosen up the soil, the hot water will make it come cleaner, with less moisture, follow up with bonnet and roto , use fans. if you can afford an rx20 roto scrubber you can put a pad driver and pad on that and scrub and dry with the rx20 but do not clean with the rx and a portable. the unit puts out too much water for a 100 psi (typical in portables) machine to suck up much. If you dont have it yet, get insurance. someday you'll need to make a claim. best, frankie c. Edited by Frankiechocolat - 26/January/2007 at 12:59am |
